How does York compare to Wimbledon in terms of attitude?

Has anyone lived in both areas? Is York a bit more down to earth?

OP posts:
leafeater · 22/09/2020 16:26

Which way are you going?

I'm sure there are bits of York that are quite Wimbolden-y and vice versa

MaggieFS · 22/09/2020 16:27

York has the minster, a beautiful river, Betty's and old city walls to walk around. Cute old streets. Mixed variety of housing and suburbs.

Wimbledon has the tennis and the common to walk around. Cute Wimbledon village high street. Mixed variety of housing.

Um... I've lived in the next town to York and the next part of London to Wimbledon. I'd be happy to live in either, but really they are so different it's hard to 'compare'. Would you rather be in London or Yorkshire? I think there's a hello of a lot to decide which would narrow it down before you get thT specific!

hammeringinmyhead · 22/09/2020 16:34

It's mandatory to send your children down't mines at 3 in Yorkshire.

@thedevilinablackdress

Who would win - Wombles or Vikings?
Dunno, but I’d pay good money to watch the rumble.
BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2020 16:38

Oh FFS, of course it's not.

You could send em to work in't mill or up't chimneys instead.

Hard to say. Vikings have the blood eagle. Wombles have refuse collection.

Aye, true. Unfortunately t'mill became "luxury apartments". Hmm

Indeed, or in the case of Salt's Mill, an art gallery, naice bookstore, restaurant and shops selling push bikes for more than a Londoner thinks that houses in Yorkshire cost.

Whatever appened to folk being appy living in an ole in't road, I ask yer.

Is that the sort of 'down to earth' attitude you're looking for OP? Don't know why I'm asking, I think she's been scared off.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/09/2020 17:30

The Wombles live in a hole in the ground though.
I think they would get on quite well in Yorkshire.

bucketofcoffee · 22/09/2020 17:36

I read the title without my glasses on.
My initial thought was, well, Wimbledon has a big hill in it and York is rather hilly.
Attitudes not altitudes!

If you can find a hill in York you’ll be doing very well!

York is heading towards 28% unemployment rates as a result of this crisis. How’s Wimbledon holding up?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/09/2020 17:47

Well there’s the big mound with the castle on.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 22/09/2020 18:13

... and Windmill Rise, and the vague hill the University is on. It's practically the Alps!

user1471462428 · 22/09/2020 18:17

And the hill up Taddy Road. Kills me everyday

Wibblypiggly · 22/09/2020 18:40

Totally read it as altitude.

DrivingHelpMe · 22/09/2020 18:44

I’ve just googled. York is apparently 20m above sea level whereas Wimbledon is 50m above sea level. I’m not sure how much difference 30m in altitude would make though!

LunaNorth · 22/09/2020 18:55

Garrowby Hill’s pretty bumpy, if it’s altitude your after.

Piglet89 · 22/09/2020 19:03

Wimbledonians do have better environmental and sustainability ratings, that’s for sure. Making good use of the things that they find, and so on.

Svalberg · 22/09/2020 19:07

Are we talking up the hill in Wimbledon, or down the hill? Because they're different...

chomalungma · 22/09/2020 19:09

Bishy Road has really changed. Full of yummy mummies from London who've changed the character. That's according to a friend of mind.

Acomb is where it's at.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 22/09/2020 19:15

More chance of seeing Rafa Nadal in your local Tesco in Wimbledon if that's what floats your boat? Less chance of your local pub being flooded? 🤔

No...I got nothing. Tell me about attitudes, OP - help us out here.

JoJoSM2 · 22/09/2020 19:27

We’ll see for how much longer.... The LK Bennett in Uphill Wimbledon has just been replaced with a Spar Grin feels at least -10m in altitude...

Goodness. I only usually go that far for the bookfest & didn't go this year, that's a bit of a come-down.

Rafa favours the £10 posh veg shop as well as Tesco, he may well move over to Spar as it's nearer

Itsmybirthday19 · 22/09/2020 20:14

@TinyMetalBirds especially the Wombles.
