How does York compare to Wimbledon in terms of attitude?

Has anyone lived in both areas? Is York a bit more down to earth?

OP posts:
Yorkshiremummyof1 · 22/09/2020 11:22

I have lived in London (not Wimbledon) and other parts of the south and north. I currently live in York. I am very happy here and everyone I have met through work and my partner, are lovely. I don't feel unsafe when I go out during the day or night and I say hello to people on the street all the time. My neighbours say hello as well, and school mums are nice as well.

Sophiafour · 22/09/2020 11:23

I've heard there are more Vikings in York. And the river floods a lot more often. And, um, the ghost walks are really good. (Based on personal experience.)

workhomesleeprepeat · 22/09/2020 11:25

@southparkroses

Sorry about my wording, I was distracted.

Just wanted to know how to the two places compare

Compare in terms of what? Like what attitudes do you want to compare?

Weird thread OP.

seayork2020 · 22/09/2020 11:26

I have lived in a few areas in the world and and one of those you mentioned. I am yet to live in a place where the entire area has one attitude so i have no idea what you are getting at

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2020 11:26

York has a Betty's

GabsAlot · 22/09/2020 11:27

lots of balls flying around wimbledon

FullTimeYummy · 22/09/2020 11:28

I've found attitudes to poorly formulated questions to be broadly similar in both Wimbledon and York. So they might not like you in York either.....

TinyMetalBirds · 22/09/2020 11:31

@Itsmybirthday19

Well I live in Wimbledon and we're all bastards.
Even the Wombles?
GiraffeinPinkPants · 22/09/2020 11:33

We lived in Wimbledon for 10 years and in York for the last 2. I loved Wimbledon and love York just the same. There are lots of similarities in that there are nice leafy areas, great shops and restaurants. People are perhaps just a little friendlier in York but that's maybe that's a Northern thing.

DragonPie · 22/09/2020 11:35

I’m waiting for the next instalment. How does Nottingham compare to Richmond? How does Sheffield compare to Southgate?

SpaceOP · 22/09/2020 11:35

Don't really have anything to say about York but is there another Wimbledon besides the one in South London? because I'm not sure you can compare a suburb of London with a city? Am I being terribly geography-stupid?

thedevilinablackdress · 22/09/2020 11:36

Who would win - Wombles or Vikings?

seayork2020 · 22/09/2020 11:38

How many Dave's are in each place? That will let you know

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2020 11:39

We could make a Mumsnet Top Trumps game. The categories could be:

Price of a 4 bed detached in a naice area within 30 mins of the centre
Proximity to Mumsnet approved primary and secondary schools
Number of Waitroses within a 3 mile radius
Average Tripadvisor score for the nearest three tearooms or hotels serving afternoon tea
Cost of a G&T
Number of places selling Diptythingy candles within walking distance

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 22/09/2020 11:40

The Wombles would win - they were Eco warriors long before the Vikings had Greta Thunberg.

Sophiafour · 22/09/2020 11:42

I beg to differ. The Vikings had better boats.

tanstaafl · 22/09/2020 11:45

There’s a lot more litter in York.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 22/09/2020 11:46

Tobermory is a mechanical genius worth of the A team. I have no doubt he could build a small frigate out of a few discarded Special Brew cans and a defunct vacuum cleaner.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/09/2020 11:47

Wimbledon has Wombles but York has the Barghest.

Get your rubbish picked up or be chased down the alleyways by a demon hound? York wins, obviously.

BookofJudith · 22/09/2020 11:50

Madame Cholet is definitely NOT a bastard. I don’t care what ANY of you say!!!

ClashCityRocker · 22/09/2020 11:51

Well, York's York.

It has it's fair share of twats, and lots of nice people too.

I'd say it's a good place to live for a lot of people.

I'm sure Wimbledon is too.

Our local press is regularly featured on Angry People In Local Newspapers.

This could indicate that local problems tend to be rather petty rather than major issues.

Or could indicate that the standard of the local press is dire.

SleepaholicsAnonymous · 22/09/2020 13:43

Central York is just a Shambles. Smile

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 22/09/2020 16:17

That’s ok because Wimbledon is really common.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2020 16:19

Grin

Surprised it took so long for that one.

PawPawNoodle · 22/09/2020 16:22

Last time I was in York someone was incredibly rude to me in a pub because they couldn't understand my very nondescript southern England accent.

Other than that I'd rather be there than Wimbledon.
