To be confused about carb heavy diet?

GreenestValley · 21/09/2020 16:09

Just reading a thread on here about weight loss and diet. Many posters commenting that the Op in that thread has a very carb heavy diet.

I feel quite confused about it as I always thought carbs were an important part of a balanced diet and a source of energy. Obviously not too much white bread, white pasta etc, but from a personal perspective I have to have a fairly carb based diet or else I get hungry and end up snacking. And I’ve always had a normal weight.
I was also under the impression that the “low carb” diets of the early 2000s eg Atkins etc that were very popular, were kind of debunked now.
Am I missing something? Do carbs affect some people differently to others? Would welcome a bit of de mystifying here if anyone has expertise just for my own understanding!

Passes Stripes some falafels on a bed of couscous with roasted pepper, onion, tomatoes and courgettes. Wink

Most people eat too many carbs and have raised insulin levels - as you get older eating carbs raises them more and contributes to fat gain.

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/09/2020 13:54

Fasting really is something we could attribute to ancestral eating practices!

Careful! Sensible statements like that could get you into all sorts of trouble on here.

I was a big fan of the f-plan diet back in the day when I was learning to cook. Many years later I still eat lots of carbs, and I’m still not fat. The odd 7lb I used to try to lose has gone.

Fads come and go, different fads suit different people.

I had to laugh during the last spate of panic buying what disappeared off the shelves first. Considering everyone claimed to be a gluten fearing vegan, it was suddenly really obvious that everyone knew what real food looked like in a pandemic situation.

Like pasta?

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/09/2020 14:04

Yes like pasta and bread and rice and meat, eggs, dairy and the shit that was left was all the processed pretend food that EVERYONE knows is bullshit nutrition and good for moons.

‘Passes Stripes some falafels on a bed of couscous with roasted pepper, onion, tomatoes and courgettes.’

That does sound delicious, and is actually a meal I often eat!

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/09/2020 14:32

My partners absolutely vile low carb dinner will be a ribeye steak with balsamic glaze and asparagus. I shall be fasting lol

AllPlayedOut · 23/09/2020 14:46

I think it varies by area. I had no trouble getting meat, milk(fresh) or eggs but I did have trouble with getting some vegan foods.(I'm not vegan. I just eat a lot of vegan and vegetarian meals.)

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/09/2020 14:53

My friend who has a child with a genuine allergy to dairy ended up tousling with someone over a dairy substitute as the lady was piling it high into her trolley (I assume because the milk aisles were bare). So I know there were plenty of non vegans eating all sorts of new and exciting food during lockdown 🤭

It's one of my favourite lunches. Or a hummus sandwich on seeded bread with grated carrot, salad leaves, cucumber, pepper, tomato, black pepper and that pink salt. I usually have a cup of soup with it. I'm hungry now! Beyond Meat burger for me for dinner tonight, with homemade chips (have a Ninja fryer thing).

Are the Beyond Meat burgers worth the money?

I think they are. They're really tasty. I've tried to make my own but they always turn out a mess no matter what I do.
pinkbalconyrailing · 23/09/2020 15:35

beyond meat is pretty good, but the supermarket own ranges and big brand ranges (birdseye) are getting really good as well.

AllPlayedOut · 23/09/2020 15:45

Thank you both. I'll try them then. I had a Moving Mountains burger the other day for the first time and that was good but I'm still curious to know if the BB burger is even better.

Haven't tried the Bird's Eye ones in a while. Tesco's black bean ones used to be quite tasty.

It all depends if you’re trying to lose weight or not - replacing most carbs with more veg is a healthy way to lose weight and if you keep protein high you don’t feel too hungry.

hamstersarse · 23/09/2020 16:15

This is the ingredient list of the Beyond Meat Burger:

Water, Pea Protein*, Expeller-Pressed Canola Oil, Refined Coconut Oil, Rice Protein, Natural Flavors, Cocoa Butter, Mung Bean Protein, Methylcellulose, Potato Starch, Apple Extract, Pomegranate Extract, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Vinegar, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Sunflower Lecithin, Beet Juice Extract (for color).

This is the ingredient list of a standard burger:

Beef, Onion, Egg

It is heavily marketed ultra processed food. How can that be better than a straight burger?

Some info on 'Expeller-Pressed Canola Oil' - www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/2015/04/13/ask-the-expert-concerns-about-canola-oil/ I wouldn't knowingly eat that stuff

Info on methylycellulose (a laxative) here: www.drugs.com/mtm/methylcellulose.html

Just have a proper burger Grin

AllPlayedOut · 23/09/2020 16:18

I don't care what's in it and there are no ingredients there that concern me so I'll eat my Beyond Burger and enjoy it thank you.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 23/09/2020 16:27

Because some people don't care to eat dead animals, hamstersarse Hmm. Can't believe you just went to all that trouble Googling and shit like it's so going to convince a vegetarian to eat dead animal. Jesus wept. And it's a 'proper' burger - buns, burger in the middle, condiments and sides. Hmm

lazylinguist · 23/09/2020 16:30

To be fair, I expect the standard supermarket burger has a few more ingredients than that. A ton of salt for starters!

Ingredients in Tesco Quarterpounders:

INGREDIENTS: British Beef (86%), Water, Rice Flour, Salt, Onion Powder, Dextrose, Sugar, Yeast Extract, Black Pepper, Sunflower Oil, Paprika, Vegetable Fibre, Preservative (Sodium Metabisulphite), White Pepper, Bay, Black Pepper Extract, Flavouring.

I'd still rather eat them than the Beyond Meat Burger, but pure unprocessed meat they are not. Grin

veryvery · 23/09/2020 17:29

Ah, I see. For some posters, their vegetarianism/veganism means they fundamentally disagree with low carb because they see it difficult to do without eating animal protein. So any health benefits of it are staunchly denied on principle...

Personally I will eat vegetarian / vegan food occasionally. No qualms about it but see would see it as a challenging way to eat full time and get the correct nutrition for my needs. Added to this I care about plants as living sentient forms of life, anyway and feel respect should be for all forms of life not just animals. So I just aim to select my food as responsibly as I can because I've got to eat.
