What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

I wanted to call DD3 Octavia. I think it’s a truly fabulous name.

Then-DH said no 🙁

So then I suggested Imogen, he said it was too trendy. I pointed out it was used by Shakespeare... still no.

Tigger03 · 21/09/2020 19:14

Alexandra, as OH is selfishly called Alexander.

blanchmange50 · 21/09/2020 19:17

my DS was named kit until around 8 weeks before his birth and we went for henry....is actually still really like kit.My DH loves grace for a girl but I remember years ago in our early dating years we discussed naming our DD amy or ella.....

Amiable · 21/09/2020 19:18

I wanted DS to be Karl/Carl, but Ex DH is German, and apparently the name sounds like the word for bald in German, so that was scrapped!

afrikat · 21/09/2020 19:20

Aurelia. I love it but most of my family have v northern accents and and it just sounds wrong. Plus my MIL pronounced it Orally when she first saw it written down so there was no getting past that

hiredandsqueak · 21/09/2020 19:25

Max and Merryn were a no because our surname begins with M.
Alice because I had a boy.

Imissmoominmama · 21/09/2020 19:28

I love the name Lettice, but everyone laughed at me. DD would’ve really suited it too.

MoaningMurlock · 21/09/2020 19:30

@Imissmoominmama

I love the name Lettice, but everyone laughed at me. DD would’ve really suited it too.
No worse than ‘apple’ I suppose Grin
JulesCobb · 21/09/2020 19:33

Noah but it sounded awful with our surname.

wellerhugs5 · 21/09/2020 19:35

Isabella.
Isabella Weller.

NancyBotwinBloom · 21/09/2020 19:42

Cassie124 · 21/09/2020 19:56

Freya, Eleanor, Athena -DS turned out to be a boy

WindsorBlues · 21/09/2020 20:11

@Laufeythejust

I love the nickname Millie but other half is from Northern Ireland and apparently there it means chav. Gutted.
This is true it originated from the working class girls who left school young to go work in the linen Mills across the country.

My daughter was 'Sienna' until
I was about 6 months pregnant and my best friend pipped me to the post!

AllPlayedOut · 21/09/2020 20:17

Is Raspberry really that ridiculous?

Yes. It's awful.

AllPlayedOut · 21/09/2020 20:18

Please tell me there isn't some poor kid out there called Raspberry.

Wrenna · 21/09/2020 20:20

I loved Oliver or Olivia and dh rejected those

RedDiamond · 21/09/2020 20:22

Isabella because my MIL had fallen out with a relative who had that name. I got railroaded into calling my DD a name that had bad associations for me actually at the time. But that was the joy of being 10 years younger than my husband who took notice of his Mother. So sad really because when my grown up DD and I were discussing names one day I told her what I had wanted to call her and she thought it was lovely. I have to say, I do not have bad associations with the name of my DD now. Her name does suit her.

JoanWilderbeast · 21/09/2020 20:22

Watched C4 SuperNanny US the other day and a girl was called Delaney (but they spelled it Delanie or something) and I thought "I like that" Smile

MrsToothyBitch · 21/09/2020 20:31

Oh, and Thomas for a boy. Old family connection and my cousin's awful wife got there first.

MrsJBaptiste · 21/09/2020 20:35

I really liked Arthur (Arty) until my mum said 'do you think he'd get called Farty Arty at school?' so that was another name off the list...

lioncitygirl · 21/09/2020 20:38

Constantine. My husband said his nickname in school would be Cunt. Put me right off the name.
