What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

Virgil, me and hubby both loved it but everyone else hated it, had girls anyway and DD1 name is kind of similar so couldn't use it now

PablosHoney · 21/09/2020 22:14

I can see that with names like Kaden etc but K names like Keith and Kevin are the opposite of that 😂

SometimesItRains · 21/09/2020 22:18

Tabitha and Isabella. I only had boys so never got to use them. DH wanted Jarob - he made it up and thought it sounded good. Needless to say I vetoed that.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 21/09/2020 22:23

Boris and Savannah

TokyoSushi · 21/09/2020 22:24

Mia but it doesn't go with our surname, think something like Mia Murphy, but worse!

StepAwayFromGoogle · 21/09/2020 22:46

I have Irish heritage and absolutely love Aoife (Ee-fa) but DP vetoed - said she'd spend her whole life spelling it (we live in England).

MsEllany · 21/09/2020 23:04

I liked Thomas for DS3 but DH didn't. Don't think there was really a reason other than he didn't like it. I still secretly think of him as Thomas sometimes (he's nearly 9!). We had lots of girls names lined up but knew we were destined for boys - there's no girls in husband's family.

Some of these names are mad though. And using Kit for Christopher is so twee and Enid Blyton!

recklessruby · 21/09/2020 23:06

Lucifer. It means morning star but I didn't think I d get away with it (and worried he d be called "Lucy" at school.
Ds is 32 and says he loves the name.
Scarlett. Too close to my own name.

anewdispensation · 21/09/2020 23:08

I love Noah but my husband vetoed it

Itsagrandoldteam · 21/09/2020 23:25

Tom - always wanted Tom for a boy, but I married a man with the surname Jones.

elliejjtiny · 21/09/2020 23:28

Jesse - dh was convinced it was a girls name.

Emily - We had all boys so couldn't use it.

Nikki360 · 21/09/2020 23:31

Scarlett I loved the name ever since I watched gone with the wind. I had three girls but each time my husband wouldn't give in ! I still love it.

thefathousewife · 21/09/2020 23:33

Meredith. I just loved it so much but my husband associated it with Meredith Kercher and that was that.

goldpendant · 21/09/2020 23:37

Dasha, but DD was born on Christmas Eve....

Like a lot of people it seems, I had Isabella at the top of my list for years. I decided I didn’t want kids in the end, which kind of makes it a moot point Grin, but I’d already been put off due to a spate of people I know going for variations of Isobel/Isabel/Isabelle. None of them actually had Isabella, but it still seemed overused.

My favourite name for a boy was Vincent. I made the mistake of telling my parents this. My mom screamed, ‘VINCE?! Old man Vince?!’ I said Vincent, not Vince. ‘Vince? Like that bloke from that really rough family who used to live by your gran?’ was my dad’s contribution. I tried to suggest that, if people had to shorten it, they could use Vinny, which just got a sort of snorting noise. Killed it for me.

The other boys’ name I liked was Kieran. Then I worked with one who was too short AND was really rude to me at a party once. That was that.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 21/09/2020 23:41

Menzies, a Scottish name but DH hated it. It is pronounced Ming Us

Electra.

DishingOutDone · 21/09/2020 23:52

Or Violet.

Or Electra Violet but i am sure that was a 70s porn star so maybe not.

My husband has just reminded me of the time that I wanted to tell his conservative (with both big and small Cs) Catholic parents that we were calling our firstborn after my heroes - Keir Aneurin Oliver Wesley. Grin DH talked me out of it...spoilsport. We were having a girl anyway, but the reactions would have been fun. And I still think it would be a good name.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/09/2020 00:21

joshua... cousin got there first.
isobella, ex didn't like it.

Bloatstoat · 22/09/2020 01:00

Hannah. I love it, but it's a complete no no with DH's surname, think Hannah Montana and it's similar!

HalfBearOtherHalfCat · 22/09/2020 02:32

Oh we had fun naming our child.

The name conversation before the 20 week scan went:

Me: So if we're having a girl Milena Kinsley would be my choice.
DH: I like it. Works for me.
Me: Really? You don't want to think of any names?
DH: Nope. I really like that. How about boys names?

Me: Fuck. We are totally having a boy aren't we?

And we were.

I really wanted McKinley in particular for DS, but DH was having none of it.

AllesAusLiebe · 22/09/2020 02:46

When we found out we were having a boy, I suggested Florian until DH informed me that it sounds like a girls name. Hmm It really doesn't to my ears, but he won.

We have a very common surname, so another suggestion of mine was vetoed because he would share the name of a really lousy centre forward who played for DH's football team in the 90s. . . A curse, apparently. Hmm

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 22/09/2020 03:17

I loved Delilah but my husband just could not wrap his tongue around it 🤦‍♀️😆
