COVID test for DS - only did the nostrils

Hi all, actually managed to book a test for DS yesterday. He had a very heavy cold last week. I did not book the test for the cold but since late last week he's had a hacking cough. Which is likely due to his cold but I couldn't send him to school with this cough even though he's feeling okay in himself albeit a little tired.

Anyway, went to the test. He point blank refused the throat test. Hubby tried but he kept shutting his mouth. We knew it was near on impossible by this point. He would of ended up getting his teeth and tongue all over the swab.

When we arrived the guy said we could just do both nostrils so we went with that. But the leaflet says that it could be less accurate.

Anyone else's littles ones only done the nostrils and it turned out fine?? Worried the results will be void 😭

Ours was fine- negative/ for ds with only a nostril swab . I was really worried about an inconclusive result, it did take nearly three days for results though

I did a double nostril swab for 5 year old dd and it came back as negative 24 hours later.

Having tried unsuccessfully to do a throat swab on my 10 year old I am impressed if anyone can get a throat swab from a child!!

I’m in Aus and here they only swab the throat in under 10’s. (We only have walk in, drive through clinics and some GP’s who do testing so swabbed by healthcare staff)

Can't comment on the double nostrils, but our results came back in 25 hours

Dahlietta · 21/09/2020 09:02

We did a double nostril and it came back in less than 24 hours: negative.

We only did nostrils on our youngest and the test came back in a couple of days (positive).

MotherofKitties · 21/09/2020 09:07

We did a nostril only swab for our 3 year old and had a negative result less than 24hrs later. Another couple we know did the same with their baby and also had a negative result.

Thanks all. Patiently waiting for the results. I'm aware they probably won't be back today but there's such a range of time frames. Some say less than 24 hours some say days!!

So anxious!!

I guess it depends what area you live. Does anyone know how far these covid tests get sent? I live in an area with a relatively low number of cases but they are increasing. Do they get sent to another part of the country??
