Do you share your employers products on your social media?

Greypurse · 20/09/2020 13:54

New boss is adamant the team share products and services on our own social media, to get ‘word’ out there. I don’t really want to bombard my friends with my employers products and services but how can I say no? They encourage all employees to be friends too, so I’ve had lots of friend requests from randoms!

You say no by saying NO. Tell your boss you will not be using your private social media to promote business, end of discussion. Make sure all of your SM accounts are set to private and I would remove or mute any coworkers that are followers/friends.

TeaLibrary · 20/09/2020 14:42

Ugh definitely not. I rarely post anything on my social media and would not be using it to post about work much less using it to promote your employers products. You arent there to be used as a free marketing tool

vanillandhoney · 20/09/2020 15:05

No, totally inappropriate imo.

PaperMonster · 20/09/2020 15:06

I won’t even associate myself with my employer on social media.

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 20/09/2020 15:10

Maybe on linked in but
social media like fb no way! We have social media policies which stipulate we say nothing about where we work on our profiles and cannot comment on anything related to our company on social media either.
I would set my profile so people cannot friend request you and just say you only use social media for immediate family

Maranello4 · 20/09/2020 15:20

Nope! Really inappropriate. I work for one of the Big 4 and it would be seen as a potential conflict of interest.

BlueThistles · 20/09/2020 15:20

depends on who you work for right? Thorntons Chocolates YES 💕

Bathrooms or Plumbers.. nah 🤣

filka · 20/09/2020 15:27

I delete all messages from my employer about social media. My private life is just that, private.

Actually I barely use SM at all, I only really have it because some companies only advertise on FB/Insta and don't have proper websites.

BlueThistles · 20/09/2020 15:30

is THIS Social Media? Mumsnet is all I have, and after watching "Social Dilemma" Im very glad. 🌺

Greypurse · 20/09/2020 15:35

They’ve asked for LinkedIn (I have a lot of connections there they want me to introduce them to) due to a previous role, and asked whole team to share on fb. Immediate boss keeps tagging me on fb posts. So annoying! Looks like the rest of our team are happy to share etc, but I’m really not.

OP posts:
Greypurse · 20/09/2020 15:36

Had 2 notifications in the last hour. Think boss is lonely and bored!

OP posts:
BlueThistles · 20/09/2020 15:59

Linkedin NO, I wouldn't give them access.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/09/2020 16:03

Not a chance and my boss wouldn't ask me to either.

Greypurse · 20/09/2020 16:11

Any suggestions what to say when other team members are happy to? I’m the most recent to join the team.

chatterbugmegastar · 20/09/2020 16:13

If it's too difficult to say no, then block the lot and carry on as you were

SE13Mummy · 20/09/2020 16:48

Change your privacy settings, block your boss and colleagues on all SM and check you've got things such as tagging approval required as well as making sure friends of friends etc. can't search for you by email address. Make sure you've deleted any tags first or they won't show up once you've blocked them.

You could try setting up a new account using your work email with Grey Company as your name. Proactively ask colleagues to tag that account or request them as friends but keep it completely separate from your personal SM. You could do the same with platforms such as Twitter or Instagram if you wanted to.

I would check your contract from your old company. It might prohibit approaching your contracts from your old job after you move to a new role.
MeredithGreysScalpel · 20/09/2020 16:59

Lock down your social media and say you’re not on it.

Just say ‘Oh yes, I’ve got an account, but I barely use it. I won’t be much use to you I’m afraid!’

ginsparkles · 20/09/2020 17:29

Yes I do, I work for a small independent high street retailer and I love our products so anything I can do to help our business is grand with me. I don't share everything but I will share some.

BlueThistles · 20/09/2020 19:58

yes as someone else suggested, Block them all then deny having it, say you deactivated it.

CurlyStrawsRock · 20/09/2020 21:22

Gosh please keep your FB private and do not add colleagues unless you are proper good friends and have been for years.

Just state this to your boss (what a dick they are!). What is the product??

Ps work in HR

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 20/09/2020 21:58

Occasionally, but it is my choice not an expectation

EhUp · 20/09/2020 22:02

I would just be very clear and tell your boss 'I keep my SM to close friends/family only and separate from work'

Ignore all friend requests from colleeagues

LtJudyHopps · 20/09/2020 22:26

Set your Facebook so you approve every post you are tagged in. Lifesaver!
I share things from my company on LinkedIn but only since Covid really and I don’t use it in a big way as I’m fairly settled in my job and not looking for a new role.
