I’ve been friends with D for over 25 years, initially as part of a wider group, but we spent lots of time together as a pair too.

Over the years obviously there have been times in our lives when we’ve not seen or messaged each other so much, it’s ebbed and flowed, and I know that usually he has rekindled the friendship when he was single / lonely/ depressed and quite frankly didn’t have anyone else!

It’s always felt a bit one-sided and every time he’s gone quiet I’ve felt quite annoyed about being dropped because he doesn’t need me anymore.

During lockdown he was single, alone, unwell and unemployed and we were in touch almost daily which is fine and I genuinely felt sorry for him and wanted to boost him if I could. Our own circumstances were also quite difficult but he never really paid much interest to that. No change there.

So now he has started fading off again, and I know he has just won a big exciting work contract and I’m also pretty sure he has gone back to his ex for the 4th time. He’s sent me stupid cryptic messages, doesn’t say what his weekend plans are, ignored questions about the ex family etc. I’m happy for his work situation but he knows I would be unimpressed by the relationship even though I’ve always only given my opinion when asked and I’ve never said I Told You So!

I just feel like I can’t be bothered anymore. I don’t get much out of this and he doesn’t seem to really care about me the way I try to care about him.

TBH I also can’t be bothered talking for hours about his work / love life / life plans then he goes off and does something in secret and doesn’t want to talk about it until his next big idea.

I can’t work out if I’m being a doormat or a selfish cow? Or both?

So would you end this now?
