To ask if you would report benefit fraud?

Name changed.

Me and DP have a friend who recently reconciled with his ex. She was a single parent who hasn't worked because she had her first DC young.

Said friend does earn and has moved in with her, however she is still claiming as a single parent and pretty much everything is paid for - rent, council tax reduction etc.

They seem to be living such a comfortable lifestyle, they recently got a new car and have had numerous staycations. I feel like it isn't any of my business what they get up to, but me and DH work full time and still can't afford anywhere near the lifestyle that they lead. It just seems a bit shit.

AIBU?

You can stay with a partner up to 4 days a week and it doesn't affect their benefits, if he's still domiciled elsewhere eg he's technically living with his parents and stays there some nights they are not technically breaking the law

gamerchick · 21/09/2020 08:53

The 3/4 days a week is a myth that's stood the test of time.

Report. I have reported several family members, they know it was me and I simply couldn't care less. In fact, I am just about to report another family member who has been running a facebook business without paying any taxes on profits.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/09/2020 08:56

It’s true when they (who ever they are) say
‘Don’t tell anyone anything not even your best friend’

Man, I'll bet you get invited to all the parties...

Or just get a job and don't commit crimes and then it's much easier as you don't have to keep secrets.

yelyah22 · 21/09/2020 09:05

No.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/09/2020 09:09

Bullywee better you are popular with them.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/09/2020 09:10

The thing about “just getting a job” like they’re spreading (like wildfire at the moment). There’d be no need for job centre workers leaving them with out a job.
You can look down on the jobless all you like but it could be argued that they’re keeping DWP staff it secure employment.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 21/09/2020 09:14

@2bazookas

I would and I have.

The benefit cheat was in a full time teaching job and had a very well paid DP. Both graduates, two good salaries. very nice privately rented home and two DC.

She came to ask me to sign her benefit form for UB, confirming she's not working. I notice the form gives her a different surname. She says breezily. "That's my maiden surname , DWP don't know about DH, they think I'm a single parent."

" You work full time. I'm not signing this."

"Okay, you're not the first to refuse, I'll ask someone else".

So I dobbed her in.

What's UB? Why did someone have to sign a form for her? Are you some where other than UK? Confused
cocodomingo · 21/09/2020 09:28

What if STBEXH moved in with single parent and refused to advise her council of change of circumstances and simultaneously wanted to pay less child maintenance when he now has no living costs? Asking for a friend...Confused

Marisishidinginmyattic · 21/09/2020 09:57

@Marmitecrackers

*That’s jealousy. If you’re looking in someone else’s pot and comparing it to your own and thinking about reporting them based on the fact they have treats and you don’t, that’s jealousy. Redirect the rage at the big companies who don’t pay their fair share of taxes or the MP’s claiming ridiculous expenses instead. But no, you’ll focus on the people you see around you because that’s what they’ve trained us to do because then we don’t watch them 😂*

Ironically you sound so much like someone who is on benefits themselves and are jealous of well off politicians.

If that’s the message you got from that section of my reply, you need lessons in comprehension 😂

But to spell it out for you, there are people who take far more money from the pot than Mr and Mrs Bloggs down the street. People focus on the Bloggs because that’s what the people who take far more money have convinced the public to do. They get away with what they’re doing when we are all looking over the fence to see where the money has gone instead.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 21/09/2020 15:58

The entire welfare bill, fraudulent or genuine, is only a fraction of the bill of unpaid corporation tax from companies we all use daily
Exactly. Putting it into perspective, someone would have to be massively taking the piss plus I’d really have to hate them to consider reporting them, eg if they were physically or emotionally abusive to animals or people I'd want to make their life less pleasurable.

I never got this obsession of kicking downwards? Save your anger for those above you who cheat the system of millions
I suspect it’s because it’s far easier to target our friends and neighbours than it is to lobby governments to change corporation tax laws. Although it’s illegal, I’d feel too uncomfortable to shop someone for benefit cheating (within reason) as it feels like a low blow, and my anger is better directed at the people in power who shaft us.

Only people who would do or do the same thing would say don't report
Bollocks! Angry I’m a bit of a fence-sitter on the topic but if I were to fall on either side it’s let them be and not report, directing my anger at bigger fish. And FYI I have never stolen a thing in my life and never would.

There should be an absolute ban on any UK politician from any side of the fence benefitting from any kind of tax avoidance scheme whilst holding office. It goes against any kind of social principle and they should be publicly shamed for it on Channel 4 the way that benefit cheats are
Hear, hear. It may not be illegal but it’s unethical IMHO.

I’m not averse to a bit of modern Robin Hoodery. Even if that’s just turning a blind eye to the poor trying to make their situation just a little more liveable
Nor am I.

Hey OP, are you going to tell your friend you reported her and break the friendship off as you don't agree with what she is doing.
Or will you continue to slither snake around her like a right 2 faced mare?
Just wondered?

Enrico · 21/09/2020 16:25

Of course I wouldn't report them.

Hyperion100 · 21/09/2020 16:25

Yep...its theft.

Workerbee80 · 21/09/2020 16:31

These threads all 11 million of them nearly always boil down to jealousy parading as 'wanting to do the right thing'.

This! You would be doing it for the wrong reasons - jealousy rather than genuinely being concerned about benefit fraud. Leave it be.

Littleposh · 21/09/2020 16:33

You clearly have no idea what DWP staff do at all 😂😂
daisypond · 21/09/2020 16:36

Why would anyone ever be jealous of someone who is a thief? Benefits in this country are paltry. They need to go to people who actually need them. And then, eventually, if people weren’t thieving, perhaps the benefits could actually be increased for those who need them, so they won’t have to live in dire circumstances.

Marylou2 · 21/09/2020 16:37

Can't understand the whole jealousy angle. I'm not "jealous" that people knowingly steal from the state. I'm bloody furious. Benefits are for those who need them to survive. They're not extra cash for liars and cheats.

Marisishidinginmyattic · 21/09/2020 16:38

Jealousy angle: people who start these threads are never inititially angry about the government or taxpayers being robbed. It's ALWAYS about what the other person is buying that the OP can't buy themselves.

Marylou2 · 21/09/2020 16:39

Who needs friends who deliberately steal and then brag about it.
Flaunch · 21/09/2020 16:40

It wouldn’t really cross my mind to be honest.
