To have my son in a cot still?

What age did you take the sides off the cotbed to turn it into a toddler bed?

When they might be able to climb over

humidifierx · 20/09/2020 09:07

Ah ok, he's never even attempted to climb out

About 16 months but I was pregnant and the bump was getting in the way (DH was away). DD2 was nearer two.

icedaisy · 20/09/2020 09:08

Dd is nearly 2 and I'm in no rush. She's quite happy in cot and never tired to get out.

justanotherneighinparadise · 20/09/2020 09:09

My youngest son stayed in a cot until he was 4 and then went straight into a single bed. My eldest climbed out of his cot at around 2 so we then had to take one side off and he also went into a single bed at 4.

Merename · 20/09/2020 09:10

My first child refused all cots so went into a mattress on the floor about 14mo, but my 2yr old still very happy in her cot and like others say, trying to climb out will be the time for us.

Aria2015 · 20/09/2020 09:10

My son was nearly 4. He's never attempted to climb and was perfectly happy in his cot. It was just that he was getting too heavy to lift in and out. Worked out well. He moved into a bed no issues as he was old enough to understand what was happening.

My son was a week off 3 and climbed out we went to a toddler bed that day ! I have to say though that first week was fun and games lots of in/out of bed all evening ! But it only took a week, novelty wore off and all was back to normal, story then bed and he's asleep.

Lackadaisically · 20/09/2020 09:15

2 years 10 months and he went straight into a normal single. We only really made the move as he is very tall and was almost as long as the cot! We also had multiple overnight or longer trips planned that winter and having him used to a normal bed before we went was very useful.

He never tried to climb out and actually seemed to like being enclosed. He's always on the go and being in basically a cage overnight helped him switch off a bit.

OhToBeASeahorse · 20/09/2020 09:17

From what I've heard its easiest to keep them in them until it's no longer safe to do so. My son is 2 and I have no intention of moving him yet!

unimaginativeusernamehere · 20/09/2020 09:17

2.5 the day after the first time he climbed out. He had no interest in getting out of bed before so hadn't attempted to climb out until there was fireworks on New Year's Eve that woke him up and frightened him.

44PumpLane · 20/09/2020 09:18

We have cot beds for our twins and they stayed in "cot" setup until about 2 years 8 months when one of them kept climbing out.

At that point we put the side to the floor to allow them both to climb in climb out hut the side acted as a bumper still.

Then when they were just over 3 we took sides off.

Sevo7 · 20/09/2020 09:19

DD 22 months is still in hers, plan to move her to a bed around 2.5 as at the moment I know she won’t just settle down and go to sleep if she can get out of bed. She can climb out but not with a sleeping bag on so she’s safe for now

1stTimeMama · 20/09/2020 09:20

Mine were all in toddler beds at 10m.

dementedpixie · 20/09/2020 09:20

2½ years old for ds
2 years for dd

edgeware · 20/09/2020 09:20

2.5, I’m pregnant and he’s over 16 kilos so just had to take the side off. He never climbed out or attempted to, and even now he never leaves his bed once he’s in! I’m not sure if it’s not occurred to him that he can!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/09/2020 09:20

I had a cot that could convert into a cot bed- didn’t bother converting it- just put DD in a single bed from 3- later than most but worked for us

RonObvious · 20/09/2020 09:21

I think he was about 3. He never tried to climb out, but kept rolling around and hitting the sides, waking himself up.

Ginfordinner · 20/09/2020 09:21

There is no right age, but a right time. Which is when they start climbing out.

olderthanyouthink · 20/09/2020 09:22

I took the side off the cot before DD was 1, she didn't like the cot anyway and I couldn't lower her into the damn thing without waking her. She rarely go out of it when she woke until the last month or so (she's 22 months). If she gets out she comes and finds me or gets in our bed.

She has a toddler bed waiting for her in her own room too, starting to try and do naps there but she rarely naps

FifteenFluffyBunnies · 20/09/2020 09:22

My youngest was 15 months when he climbed out. The thing is you never know that they are going try and climb out until they actually do. I’d be wary once they are physically capable.

DelurkingAJ · 20/09/2020 09:22

Agree. We took the side off when (aged nearly 3) DS1 suddenly appeared in our room one morning. We asked him how he’d got there and he demonstrated a somersault down the outside of the cot.

DS2 was found straddling the upstairs stair gate at about 18 months so the sides came off his cot (and the stair gates came down) then.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 20/09/2020 09:23

DC1 - 18 months
DC2 - never had a cot
DC3 - 19 months

babyguffingtonstrikesagain · 20/09/2020 09:23

When we found her in the morning sat on top of a chest of drawers. Age 2.5

DelurkingAJ · 20/09/2020 09:23

Oh, we did get a guard rail thing for them though. They could get out round the sides but it stopped them falling out in the middle of the night.
