To have my son in a cot still?

What age did you take the sides off the cotbed to turn it into a toddler bed?

Oysterbabe · 20/09/2020 09:23

Both of mine were 2.5 when they went into a bed.

Mol1628 · 20/09/2020 09:24

About two. For potty training.

steff13 · 20/09/2020 09:25

2.5-3 for mine. I have three, none of them ever attempted to climb out. If we went by that, they'd still be in the cribs, and two of them are adults. 😂

changerr · 20/09/2020 09:27

4 years old. She loved her cot.

TeenPlusTwenties · 20/09/2020 09:39

Around 3 - 3.5.
She then stayed in the toddler bed until nearly 7 (tiny).

PinkPosyPetals · 20/09/2020 09:42

Around three, he never climbed out, but was getting heavy to lift in. Moved into bed, and he slept straightaway, never climbed out.

A dozy friend took her son out of his cot years earlier, and he never slept in his bed.

Why would you take them out of the cot when there was no need ?

Bonkers

Don’t be fooled into doing what friends have done, do what is right for you and your family.

Disappointedkoala · 20/09/2020 09:44

2 and a bit when we watched her climb out of it on the monitor.

Natsku · 20/09/2020 09:45

DD went into a toddler bed (well, a mattress on the floor) around 16 months because she screamed every time I tried to put her in the cot.

DS is still in his cot at 2.5 years and I'm keeping him in it as long as I can! He's never tried to climb out and he's very happy in it and it makes life a lot easier knowing he's safely contained.

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 20/09/2020 09:46

My oldest 2 were 18 months. They didn’t climb out but just thought we’d give it a try. Both fine, slept well in their beds from then on. DC1 I took the sides off the cot, DC2 straight into a single bed.
DC3 is 20 months and won’t be doing it for a while because I can’t be bothered.

MsKeats · 20/09/2020 09:47

2 years old or less about 18 months.

Confrontayshunme · 20/09/2020 09:48

Oldest DD was in reception and her legs started sticking out the end! DD2 is almost four and no sign of discomfort. Neither has ever climbed out though, and they sleep in big beds on holiday and at grandparents fir sleepovers.

Supertree · 20/09/2020 09:52

Around 20 months. He learnt to climb over the top. Thought it might have been a one off but no, every single time I put him in there he climbed right back out. Had to put him in a bed and it was horrendous because he wouldn’t stay put! Room was stripped of everything except bed and drawers, then all of the drawers were emptied of clothes. So we put child locks on the drawers and he would get his fingers through the gaps to pull things out. Naps completely stopped at that age as nothing we did could encourage him to sleep as soon as he could get out of the bed.

Kept my eldest in a cot for quite a lot longer because he was very small and didn’t learn to climb for a few years.

zigaziga · 20/09/2020 09:52

Never managed to use a cot with either of mine as they didn’t like it.

Ginfordinner · 20/09/2020 09:53

@DelurkingAJ

Oh, we did get a guard rail thing for them though. They could get out round the sides but it stopped them falling out in the middle of the night.
I had to get one for DD because she was such a fidget. Her bed was quite high, so we had to keep the guard rail on until she was 5.
sapnupuas · 20/09/2020 09:53

My son was almost 3 and a half as he just never tried to climb out of it and we were lazy!

A year later he's still in his cot bed with only one side down...

LunaHardy · 20/09/2020 09:53

My DD was out by the time she was about 18 months old. This wasn't through choice, she was actively trying to climb out. She's always been a little climber. She was a bit of a pain at bedtimes for a while when the sides came off, in and out multiple times until she finally went to bed. But she's great now, straight to bed.

Mammyloveswine · 20/09/2020 09:56

My youngest is 2 years 9 months and still in a cot in our room... we were supposed to move him out at Easter but then lockdown happened and husband is working from home, often until 9pm so him working in our room wouldn't work when I'm wanting a shower or the boys need the loo (en-suite upstairs/family bathroom downstairs).

We are now thinking of bunk beds for the boys.

GADDay · 20/09/2020 09:58

DS1 - 14 months - we moved, so the upgrade worked
DS2 - 20 months - we went travelling for 7 months, he had no choice
DD - 18 months - moved room, too much faff to put the cot up.

FippertyGibbett · 20/09/2020 10:00

Mine went into a single bed by 2.

MissisBee · 20/09/2020 10:03

We took the side off when my son was nearly 3 as I was pregnant and couldn't lift him in or out. He'd never tried climbing out by then and was happy in it. Sleep's been a nightmare since!

draughtycatflap · 20/09/2020 10:03

As long as he’s not about to start college he should be fine.

glassbrightly · 20/09/2020 10:04

This is a really useful thread ! One of ours have ever been climbers. I am trying to remember when we took the sides off for first two as the baby is coming up to two. From recollection it was around 2.5, moved into big beds at I think 3.5

Camomila · 20/09/2020 10:04

DS had one you couldn't take the sides off. We moved him to a toddler bed when he climbed out at 20m.

Yes it's somewhat of a competitive sport. An nct friend has taken her son out of his cot and then complains that he gets out of bed for hours every single night... well, you know what to do!

Our son disliked change and so was nearly four before he could be persuaded to change. Never attempted to climb out.
Our eldest never went in a cot.

It’s what works for you.
