I have been wanting to start cross stitch for ages so bought a kit and really didn’t like it much so have started messing around with hand embroidery. I am loving it!!! Am like an old lady at heart it’s Saturday night and am stitching away... here’s my first finished thing yes it’s not perfect but I like it.

Very nice! It's always good when you find something you enjoy!

bimbimbap · 19/09/2020 19:20

it’s so therapeutic and time flies (in a good way) when you’re focussing on something like this Smile

BalanceGreen · 19/09/2020 19:21

Great start! I've never mastered 'proper' embroidery and don't think I have the patience now.

user1019273703 · 19/09/2020 19:22

I love to cross stitch. Because you have to concentrate it does wonders for my anxiety. My biggest achievement was a height chart!

IShitGlitter · 19/09/2020 19:24

I too suffer with stress, anxiety and depression so this is definitely helping I am looking forward to my next one already

Well done you! It's such a relaxing hobby.
I've recently taken up crochet and it does help to blot out negativity.

Keep going!

MJMG2015 · 19/09/2020 19:28

Well done! Thanks for starting such a nice thread.

I used to cross stitch a lot, but not much freehand embroidery- I'm not very creative.
However I'm not keen on the way Aida looks (the cloth where you can see the holes/squares, so I used to use very fine linen. Sadly my eye sight isn't up to it anymore. I have to say though, I haven't tried since I got my glasses, so I might order a couple of Christmas kits & see how I get on!

Hahaha88 · 19/09/2020 19:29

Yabu because this should be in chat not aibu. That aside, it looks good and having a hobby like this is fab

Netflixandfreeze · 19/09/2020 19:31

Well done OP! Great start - welcome to the world of needles and back stitch!

I'm a crossstitcher - does wonders for my stress and anxiety levels. Noticeably happier when I've a project on the go...

StCharlotte · 19/09/2020 19:31

Very good.

I think I'd like to take up cross stitch. I need to do something.

I last did it in infant school!

ChelseaCat · 19/09/2020 19:39

I LOVE cross stitch! I did the attached after our wedding a couple of years ago. I think it’s the only creative thing I’m proud of 😍

Beware OP - it’s SO addictive!!

Sorry I meant to say, you’ve made a great start!!

Lemming20 · 19/09/2020 19:41

This is absolutely lovely! I tried and gave up, I’m just not that creative however much I wish I was. Good for you and what a lovely happy thread Smile

whatsoccuringnow · 19/09/2020 19:44

Have a look at Emma Congdon. Fab designs

YellowNotRed · 19/09/2020 19:46

I think you should cross stitch your username Grin

lidoshuffle · 19/09/2020 19:47

The Royal School of Needlework does some great on-line courses. Quite expensive but you'd be learning from the best!

Very nice OP! I always start these things with great intentions but it goes wrong... @ChelseaCat that is amazing!

MoistMolly · 19/09/2020 19:48

Yabvu for actually naming the hobby. It really isn't the done thing on here.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/09/2020 19:49

You might enjoy blackwork embroidery too. It is just single stitches, nothing difficult or fancy, but gives a lovely effect.

This is a project I am working on - a block a week (and it’s provided free by the lovely designer).

tofuschnitzel · 19/09/2020 20:18

That's fab, OP! I love hand embroidery, I find it very relaxing. Do you use Instagram at all? It is really useful for following hand embroidery accounts, and also for inspiration. The Royal School of Needlework have many books that may interest you.

Lovely blackwork posted by another member too.

ViciousJackdaw · 19/09/2020 20:26

No, it certainly isn't. The title should read: AIBU to show you my new hobby (think crafts).
lazyarse123 · 19/09/2020 20:29

Well done op. I do printed crosstitch, i'm not clever enough for following a pattern and I like to watch tv while sewing. As a pp said it is very addictive, I got up at 7 this morning so I could sew in peace.

AllPlayedOut · 19/09/2020 20:32

Well done. I love the colours. It's a great start.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 19/09/2020 20:37

That's really nice. Well done

I took up embroidery and cross stitch to deal with my anxiety issues and defeat the nibbles! It's hard to eat crisps and embroider. I haven't done any for a long time now though but you've inspired me to pull out some half finished projects!

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/09/2020 20:47

I love the way it looks, I am not a fan of "perfect" gifts that are handmade, I much prefer them to not look like they came off a production line. I certainly wouldnt turn my nose up at that on Etsy.

I am also impressed that you have mastered freehand stitching, I have been sewing for years and have never managed it. I think its one of those talents you either have or dont have, like being musical or artistic.

But yes, I am afraid you are VVU to have actually named your hobby.

What you should have said was "AIBU to love my new hobby?"
and then post without actually showing or telling what it is (as a PP said "Think crafts) and using the phrase "doing my hobby" at least three times per paragraph and when pushed, saying it could be outing Wink :o
