Tax one. Eat out scheme, we had a voucher and the receipt took money off fe eat out but that wasn't passed to us?

So our voucher covered 4 afternoon teas and we happened to book it on the last day of the scheme.

Our receipt showed 2 extra drinks I brought but also took £40 is off for the scheme. The person was confused and had just come into a shift and charged us for the drinks.
After dh said he is sure that they will be claiming that eat out tax back due to our receipt and yet we didn't get the benefit?

I've emailed and called the hotel twice about it, over 2 weeks ago and not heard back.
It maybe a small amount but surely that's still fraud?

Buy the maximum they you could get off the bill was £40 for 4 people. So that discount was applied?

The eat out scheme was for businesses i thought, that the money would go to them, to help out the businesses.

The discount also didn’t apply to alcoholic drinks, was that the issue?

The money definitely went to the person buying the food!

For my bday back in May, dh brought me a voucher for afternoon tea. About 130 pounds.

In addition I had 2 glasses of wine.
When the bill came, there was a reduction showing, down to about 80 for the eat out scheme.

I paid for the wine, about 18 pound and obviously we didn't pay anything else because the voucher covered the cost.

But the receipt had shown the discount, but they didn't give us that discount.
So for instance perhaps they should have said.. Here is another voucher for the difference between your voucher, paying full price and the discount on the scheme.

Because the receipt shows the discount and they can claim that back on the government.

Do you mean that the afternoon tea cost £80 and you had a voucher for £80. But they put it on the receipt as £40 (claiming EOTHO) and took all your vouchers anyway. So you didnt get £40 off, but they will claim the £40 from the government?

I dont think it would be deliberate fraud as its probably just the way the till is set up to take 50% off, but they shouldn't be claiming it back. At the end of the day it's not your problem to solve though.

I think you are right.

The voucher should have covered the full cost, but they got the discount and also charged you for extra drinks. So they have made an additional £40, profit from this.

You haven't heard back because they have enough of people not reading T&Cs properly. As are many other places...

You got your £40 as in £10 per person off. That's it. What more do you want?

I would assume it was automatic on a till.

Ie the receipt automatically put the discount on, people paying for afternoon tea that day, got the discount.. We paid by voucher and due to that we paid full price. With a voucher you just hand it over.

Hmmm I'd be annoyed at that to be honest, I know we should be supporting businesses etc but if they can claim it back as well then they have effectively been paid twice. Although was the voucher for £130, or did it just say it covered afternoon tea but your DH paid £130 for it?

This is important.
If it just said "afternoon tea" then that's what you got. If they changed the price up or down irrespective of covid, you wouldnt be expecting to pay or be refunded the difference.
If it said £130 then you should have got the discount.

In either case it is wrong that they claimed back the £40 from the government.

Perhaps the date when the vouchers were bought counts as the date of the transaction, i.e. not within the discount period?

And now I don't have the voucher... I'm annoyed the hotel hasn't come back to me to explain either.

But at the very least you should have had discount for the drinks I'd have thought.

Drinks were not covered and I'm more than happy to pay for them.

What type of voucher was it, was it there own issued voucher? I think I would have asked if they could issue refund vouchers for the difference and if not I would have saved it for another time.
