YABU

Honestly, you need those lovely soft absorbent Hamman Bath/ Turkish Peshtemal Towels.

They get softer the more you use and wash them!
(I was sceptical about them and tried one out for Gym & Swimming... I am now slowly replacing all my towels!!)

Chemenger · 19/09/2020 10:04

I have accidentally found my people. DH is always trying to throw out my thin crispy towels and replace them with “nice” thick fluffy ones. He has his own soft ones by the way. Tumble drying makes them soft. Like a PP I’m seriously considering hammam towels but I’m worried that while they will be thin, which is good, they might not be scratchy enough.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 19/09/2020 10:07

I'm always slightly embarrassed whenever I put out one of my crispy towels for a guest, but who knows - they may have been a secret fan!!!

How many people on this thread are now considering putting out a choice of fluffy or crispy towels for honoured guests?

Redcrayons · 19/09/2020 10:07

My best ones are from Asda.

I don’t mind a crispy one but My DCs act like I’ve given them sandpaper if they aren’t tumble dryer fluffy.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 19/09/2020 10:11

YABU. No softener and line dried means crispy central here. However I want to replace all my traditional thick towels with thin cotton ones like you get in France. I have one beautiful set I bought in France many years ago, bit like hamman style, but much better quality cotton and they dry me beautifully, whilst being light and they dry afterwards really quickly when hung up. I'm tired of wrestling with bath sheets, they are too heavy and take up too much room. Thin and crispy all the way.

wedidntstartthefires · 19/09/2020 10:11

Another crispy fan here.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 19/09/2020 10:14

@felineflutter

Thick, soft towels also have that annoying habit of coming undone when wearing them. You can get a tight fit with a thin one.
Oh my God, you are so right, why had this not occurred to me before? Just another reason to go thin towels.
TwentyViginti · 19/09/2020 10:32

Team Crispy all the way!

cctvrec · 19/09/2020 10:52

@BanalAnal that's the beauty of these exact towels. The Restmor Luxor 100% cotton ones. They don't crisp up. I wash mine at any temperature, though usually 60, with softener (but not necessary, I love the Comfort smell) and tumble dry. They are slightly less soft if line dried. But only slightly.

With it taking two years to find the exact towels to replace my ones going tatty, what to do with the old ones was easy. They were in such bad condition it was the bin for sure. Vets and animal shelters like old towels though. Very useful to them.

But as for the debate on crispy or soft. The answer is easy.

Both.

One guest size that's thin and crispy to quickly scrub dry the body and then make a hair turban and the big soft fluffy bath sheet to wrap snuggly around you for the last bit if drying off and lazing around for a bit.
Crispies can be bought from anywhere I'm sure. Ours are three that my hubby took to Tenerife for a lads holiday 23 years ago however so perhaps I'd have to shop around a bit.

Yoffel · 19/09/2020 10:58

Everyone here stating that the crispy, stiff as a board, sandpapery towels are best has the correct answer.

For the (inferior) fluffy towels - isn’t that achieved by way of tumble drying?

Tarararara · 19/09/2020 10:59

I know the answer to this!!!

The secret is to buy bamboo/cotton mix towels (I have 40/60% ones) in whatever thickness you prefer. We do not own a tumble dryer so our towels are line dried or on an airer above the Aga and the bamboo content keeps them thick and fluffy.

Having said that we only use the fluffy towels for our holiday let - we like scratchy ones ourselves!

wigglerose · 19/09/2020 11:19

In my opinion Premier Inn have the best towels. Nice and substantial and the best mix of soft and scratchy. No idea how they do it but I do love a Premier Inn towel.

outs self as a massive boring saddo

lookingatthings · 19/09/2020 11:39

Some excellent tips here. We don't have a tumble dryer or use fabric softener- I like my washing line dried where possible. I might try the vinegar thing in the old towels and see if that rejuvenates them. Otherwise @cctvrec those towels look like they might be what I'm after.
All those still banging on about crispy towels? You like what you like.

I’m a big believer in Turkish hamam towels, preferably the linen ones.

Fluffy towels make my skin crawl.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/09/2020 11:50

Also, the waffle ones, preferably linen, the best thing ever.,

Thesunrising · 19/09/2020 11:55

Use the bare minimum of powder. Don’t ever use conditioner. Use a magnet ball thingy and line dry outside. This works in our hard water area.

SpearmintPeppermint · 19/09/2020 11:57

Another vote for Asda.

MrsKingfisher · 19/09/2020 12:01

M&S towels, washed without fabric conditioner, line dried then put in the tumble drier for 10 mins. Lovely soft absorbent towels to cocoon myself in.

Starbonnet123 · 19/09/2020 12:20

Love crispy rough towels, just fondling some on my dining table that were brought in last night after being on the line . Ex always thought I was a weirdo Smile

leiaskye · 19/09/2020 12:45

I bought mine from Next. They are lovely.

Never use fabric softener (stop the absorbency), & never line dry. Always use the tumble dryer.

AngusThermopyle · 19/09/2020 12:52

Crispy thinner towels here too, with just enough crispiness to have a little crunch sound when folded.
I several hammam ones too, they're very nice but not very crispy.
Great for travelling and days out etc.

SunSparkle · 19/09/2020 13:12

I love soft towels. I have these and they are really lovely:

Fallsballs · 19/09/2020 13:13

For a soft towel I use a large velvety beach towel. They seem to retain softness. I have inherited my mother’s ability to turn any towel into a thin crispy tea towel, it must be genetic. Sheridan or Asda, I ruin them.

ViciousJackdaw · 19/09/2020 13:42

And what do you do with the old tatty ones? I'd love new ones but not quite sure what to do with old ones !

Cut them up for cloths or donate them to your nearest animal shelter - they always seem to need towels. Alternatively, you can send them to me - I love a crispy, tatty towel!
