1 year old napping outside?

Hi, so my 1 year old Ds started nursery today as I have just started a new job. He had a couple of settling in sessions which seemed fine, he done 4 hours yesterday and then had his first full day today while I was at work.
My issue is, I got an update on the app of him napping outside on what seemed like a mat on the floor, he had what looked like a blanket covering him but that's it?
Now I immediately sent the picture to my husband in an angry look at this it's terrible way, for him to respond, "yeah he seems fine" I think its awful that they didn't take him inside and put him in a cot. Am I over reacting?
It was a pleasant enough day and it was sunny, not sure on the temp as Iv been inside all day, but I just feel really put off by it and I feel reluctant to send him back again. Or am I just being unreasonable?

My eldest is 23 and I used to put him in his pram out to sleep in the garden.

AGoatAteIt · 18/09/2020 20:57

YABU imo but I would say that as both of mine slept outside in the pram as babies for their daytime nap. A mat on the floor is no different. Fresh air is good for them and my gran swore blind they sleep better outside which was definitely true of my eldest.

Abraid2 · 18/09/2020 20:58

Why do you think he’d be better off indoors at a time when everyone is being encouraged to spend more time in the fresh air?

raffle · 18/09/2020 20:59

Mine had fantastic naps in the prism in the garden. Fresh air made them sleep longer and more deeply. I would always put them outside if they fell asleep in the pram. I find it odd that you would park them up in the pram indoors!

peonyrose87 · 18/09/2020 20:59

Also they would not be allowed to leave a child in the sleep room while everyone else is outside. They would need to leave a staff member inside which would make their numbers unsafe.

FippertyGibbett · 18/09/2020 20:59

Vitamin D from the sun.
I wish I could have a nap under a blanket outside every day !

Looneytune253 · 18/09/2020 21:00

I genuinely don't get what your problem is? Could you explain? He went to sleep and was supervised? If he didn't like it he wouldn't have slept. If he was genuinely unhappy that might be another issue altogether but nothing you've said makes me think he didn't like it? Seems perfect to me! Could you explain some of your concerns?

lifesalongsong · 18/09/2020 21:01

I think it's good for young children to sleep in the fresh air, I often left mine in the garden. Maybe it's a coincidence but they have very healthy immune systems.

And you don't catch a cold simply by being cold.

FloreanFortescue · 18/09/2020 21:02

Seems odd when they have a dedicated sleep room though Hmm

My kids both napped outside in their pram. A mat on the floor seems a bit bonkers Grin

Ohtherewearethen · 18/09/2020 21:04

Why does it matter if it is his first day or 300th day?! He wouldn't have gone to sleep if he was upset/uncomfortable or worried. I really can't see what your issue is? You seem to keep changing your mind about what the actual issue is too. Surely you'd be happier that he was out in the fresh air rather than in a stuffy room with six or seven other sleeping infants? It was a mild, sunny day, he was on a comfy mat under a blanket, just like he would have been indoors but with the advantage of fresh air. I think it's a fantastic way of doing naps.

MissDollyMix · 18/09/2020 21:06

The nursery my dc (U.K.) went to used to use the outdoor napping as a selling point. Worked for me! I loved that my children were able to do this. My children- eldest in particular who is now 10, still have really fond memories of this. I’m really not sure what your issue is? Supervised- yes, fresh air- yes, comfortable- yes

iano · 18/09/2020 21:06

Sounds fab! If mine falls asleep in the pram I take him straight through to the garden. He sleeps better outside.
Yabu.

Mippi · 18/09/2020 21:07

I imagine they're trying to spend as much of the day outside as possible at the moment due to coronavirus?

DappledThings · 18/09/2020 21:07

I'm actually baffled that the majority of you think it's acceptable
You haven't given any explanation of why you think it's unacceptable.

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 21:07

@Looneytune253
Ok so yesterday I was asked about his daily routine. His naps and how long where does he sleep and how often. I told them he naps in his cot and he has to be "put to sleep" as in you can't leave him awake and expect him to sleep. So obviously leaving him for the full day today for the 1st ever time was nerve wracking to me and I expected them to kinda follow his routine in a fashion. What I didn't expect was to receive a picture of him sleeping on the floor outside in the garden. I'm in the north east of the uk it's hardly the Caribbean.

I would love it if they put my little one to sleep on a mat outside. It sounds lush. Smile I used to fuss over his naps when he was in the baby room, but then decided that when he is in nursery it's the staff's responsibility to sort his naps out, and I decided to let it go. When he turned 1 and moved to the toddler room they had mats on the floor and the kids were literally sleeping all over the shop. I'd be picking mine up and I'd have to step over snoozing toddlers. Grin They all seemed so happy and seeing all those little people scattered around was adorable. Haha. I think that as long as they get their sleep (if they still need it) and they're safe that's all that matters.

shinynewapple2020 · 18/09/2020 21:08

If he already has a bit of a cold / runny nose I would think it far better for him out in the fresh air .

If he was covered by a blanket he wouldn't be cold .

My understanding is that for early years where they have for the space that schools and nurseries are doing as much as they can outside at the moment .

heymammy · 18/09/2020 21:08

All three of my DC slept in the garden in their pram at various times up to about 1yr old, occasionally in the rain but not often. The general hubbub of the outdoors and the fresh air meant they had good naps.

Your nursery sounds lovely, natural and caring imo.

whattodo2019 · 18/09/2020 21:09

My children always napped outside at nursery. Lovely fresh air . What more could you want.

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 21:09

My issue is he was outside on the ground!
They have a room for sleeping! So if they were inside he'd be in a separate room! Not in the same room as the kids that are playing!

I thought he was on a mat?

OliviaPopeRules · 18/09/2020 21:11

YABU and ridiculous

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 21:12

@DappledThings
Your just being pedantic.

OP posts:
CoronaBollox · 18/09/2020 21:12

I would find this odd. But it is harmless. I suspect it's more the fact you were missing your DC then to be sent a picture of him laying outside sleeping seemed a bit... lonely? Probably not the right word.

He was content enough with the nursery worker to fall asleep whilst she sang to him etc, so I'm sure he happily slept.

Hercwasonaroll · 18/09/2020 21:13

So they rocked him to sleep as per your instructions. Then left him to sleep in a safe place, in view of the staff, with a low risk of coronavirus, benefits from the sun, under a blanket and on a mat, and you're still pissed off? OK.
