1 year old napping outside?

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 20:20

Hi, so my 1 year old Ds started nursery today as I have just started a new job. He had a couple of settling in sessions which seemed fine, he done 4 hours yesterday and then had his first full day today while I was at work.
My issue is, I got an update on the app of him napping outside on what seemed like a mat on the floor, he had what looked like a blanket covering him but that's it?
Now I immediately sent the picture to my husband in an angry look at this it's terrible way, for him to respond, "yeah he seems fine" I think its awful that they didn't take him inside and put him in a cot. Am I over reacting?
It was a pleasant enough day and it was sunny, not sure on the temp as Iv been inside all day, but I just feel really put off by it and I feel reluctant to send him back again. Or am I just being unreasonable?

Mine starts nursery next week, they have mats so they can sleep wherever and whenever they are tired. I’d have no issues with this at all!
Fresh air especially at the moment is great!

Susannahmoody · 18/09/2020 20:39

Is this in the UK? Seems unusual

OverTheRainbow88 · 18/09/2020 20:39

I would rather my kid nap outside in the fresh air than in a room with 8 other kids, even without covid it seems healthier if kid happy to do it.

OverTheRainbow88 · 18/09/2020 20:40

However, if you aren’t happy, just tell them so

Theworldisfullofgs · 18/09/2020 20:40

You can't get a cold from being outside. You get it from a virus.

If he was cold he wouldn't of slept. Currently sleeping outside is much healthier.

CraftyGin · 18/09/2020 20:42

I'm sure I spent the first four years of my life outside in a Silver Cross pram.

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 20:42

Ok so I don't understand why I'm being "precious" but thanks for the feedback guys.
I'd expect him to be put in the baby sleeping room and left with a baby monitor/camera which I know they do have. Whilst the staff are outside supervising the other kids. He's just turned 1 it was his first day there without me and my first day of leaving him for 9 hours. Sorry for being "precious"

Am I the only one who thinks this is odd? I have never heard of nursery's putting children to sleep outside!
I don't think you are being unreasonable. I wouldn't put my 15 month old outside for a nap !!

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 20:43

I wouldn't have minded as much if he was in a pram and he had fallen asleep. Obv he's slept in a pram before. Although never been left outside.

Once the kids are mobile, they all slept on mats at our nursery. In nice weather I always let my kids sleep outside, fresh air is good for them and they tended to stay asleep longer too.

You can't catch a cold from being cold, it's a virus, caught from contact with the virus.

With covid 19 around I'd much rather they sleep outside in circulating fresh air rather than indoors in close proximity to other children.

The only thing you might have a point about is whether it was safe, was there a chance another child could come running in and trip over him. I'd guess not, they probably have an area set aside for naps, but definitely worth checking if you don't know where in the garden he was.

IWantT0BreakFree · 18/09/2020 20:45

There’s nothing wrong with toddlers sleeping outside. It’s good for them and he’s not going to catch a cold. That’s just not how colds work. If you don’t like it for whatever reason then you can ask the nursery staff to make sure he naps indoors in future but it would be unfair to go in with an accusatory tone or behaving angrily because they don’t deserve that at all.

Hercwasonaroll · 18/09/2020 20:46

He's not been "left" outside if other kids are out there?

It's a perfectly fine place to sleep and the staff sound excellent.

PP made a good point re covid. Far safer to be outside.

You are being precious and your risk evaluation skills are poor.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 18/09/2020 20:46

Unusual for UK. Totally normal and encouraged in Scandanavia. All the way down to - 10.

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 20:47

@bisvuit I find it very odd and slightly unsettling! If we are out and about and he falls asleep in the pushchair fair enough, il bring it inside and leave him In it, but I'd never just leave him to nap in the garden!
And yeah I'm in UK

I think it sounds fab? Napping outside is very common in some countries. Lots of nice fresh air.

The cold does not cause a cold either so I’m not sure where you’ve got that from? But under a blanket I’m sure they were fine, it hasn’t been chilly this week.

Mammaaof · 18/09/2020 20:49

@bigmamama so if your out and about outside and he falls asleep in the pram youd find an inside area to sit while he slept? No course you wouldnt! Some people complain about the world tuning, honestly!

lyralalala · 18/09/2020 20:49

Mine all slept much better in earshot of the other kids at nursery. Going into the sleep room made them nosey, cranky and less likely to nap.

Sleeping outside on a lovely day is such a nice thing. Especially at the moment when kids are getting out into the fresh air less.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 18/09/2020 20:54

I'm baffled as to why you think it's odd for a child to sleep outdoors. What would you do if you were out for a walk & he fell asleep in the pushchair? This is no different. Fresh air and vitamin D are really good for children. I would happily put mine to nap outside if she would sleep with distractions around her (she won't).

A child is less likely to catch a cold outdoors than in, so if you are worried about illness, you ought to be glad they kept him outside.

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 20:54

@Mammaaof being out and about whilst pushing the baby in the pram and he falls asleep, is completely different to being laid on a mat on the ground in a garden full of kids and left to sleep. Especially when it's not what he's used to, I don't even know how long he slept for he very well may have been uncomfortable and only stayed asleep for 5/10 minutes!!

Most kids over 1 sleep on mats on the floor at my daughters nursery.

The cots are saved for smaller babies.

peonyrose87 · 18/09/2020 20:55

Most nurseries will use mats for naps as it's safer than children climbing out of cots. It's also likely that there were other children napping too but you would not be able to see a picture of them. Also, they're going to be sleeping out of the way of others and will he supervised so no one will bump into them. Nurseries are focussing On mostly outdoor activities at the moment as it is deemed safer Covid wise.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 18/09/2020 20:55

Ps on occasions when mine has nodded off in a pram I have always parked it out in the garden rather than bring it in, weather permitting.

Spottybluepyjamas · 18/09/2020 20:56

Much better to sleep outside in the fresh air - especially under the current circumstances!

You can't catch a cold from being outside (even if it was cold) - colds are viruses and you have to be in contact with them, so actually being outside would reduce the risk of picking one up.

It's a bit unusual, but it was a nice day and I doubt they'd have left him somewhere where anyone would trip over him. They sounds very attentive, so I think it's fine.

namechangetheworld · 18/09/2020 20:57

Honestly, I find it a bit weird, especially when they have a dedicated room for it inside. Napping in a pram outside (which DD1 does on a daily basis) is completely different to napping on the ground with other children running about, so not sure why so many are making the comparison.

Do completely agree about it being healthier though, especially in present times.

bigmamama · 18/09/2020 20:57

My issue isn't really the fact he slept on a mat, they have them indoors in the sleeping area aswell as the cots and blankets and big cushions and monitors and cameras!
I'm actually baffled that the majority of you think it's acceptable! Especially after I was asked about how/where/when he naps and it was his 1st full day.
