Thinking of participating but worried I would be seen as a scape goat

I'm one. All actions agreed are recorded as agreed or not. They are very careful with minutes. It give great insight to the school and its a collective. Can't see how you can be resented for it as you won't be in charge of anything.

I was a governor for two terms of office (8 years) and I didn't encounter any sort of resentment or moaning. It's very interesting, you learn a lot.

I would love to be involved. I really care about education and it being able to cater to as many peoples needs and help every child to thrive.

Ive emailed the headmistress to let her know I'm interested and to ask her for more information.

I think it depends on the schoolA, the staff, the other governors and the parents. I’ve been a staff governor at one school and a co opted governor at another. At the first, it was pretty much run by the head and the chair, so I didn’t feel that the governors were able to challenge and effect change. At the second, I felt that those of us who weren’t working were relied upon to do the grunt stuff. There was plenty that I felt needed to be reviewed and challenged, but I didn’t feel that there was sufficient impetus to do so.

We spent far too long on things that were incidental, in my opinion and not enough on evaluating the strategic direction of the school, given that that is a key function of a governing body.

I didn’t encounter resentment, but I did feel a bit put upon. There were online courses and physical courses that we were expected to do and it was quite a time commitment.

I’m a parent governor. I enjoy it - I find sometimes I’m a bit overwhelmed by the technical terms and complexities of the role but I have never felt resented.
