To miss out on this show as I don't want to wear a mask

DD and I (along with friend & her DD) were due to see a West End show we'd been wanting to see for ages. It was cancelled due to Covid. We then bought tickets for a drive in version of the show which was cancelled last minute. They've now announced a limited run of the show later this year. I was initially excited thinking 3rd time lucky but my heart sank when I read all the inevitable "Covid safe" blurb about masks, sanitising and temp checks. Sent it to my friend anyway who was "urgh no thanks". She then added we'd probably get cancelled again anyway! Although I would love to see the show I too don't think it's worth the hassle. DD & I hate wearing masks for any length of time so to wear for an entire show plus the journey into town would just be uncomfortable & depressing.

I know it's good to support the arts but I just feel sad about the whole thing. We"ve tried to go out and do normal things like go out for meals, to attractions etc but just feel sad at the reality at how far from normal things are and don't feel I can be bothered trying anymore.

No point to this really, I know why these measures are necessary but just feel so sad about it all and long for it all to end. I find seeing masks everywhere so depressing! Unfortunately reality has dawned that we may be living like this for a very very long time Hmm

@DisgruntledGuineaPig I have no problem with people not going somewhere because they don't want to wear a mask. I have an issue with people not wearing them but still going out when they have no medical or psychological reason not to. They make it so much harder for people who have a genuine reason they can't wear them such as victims of oral rape.

I also think if some people spent a little time getting used to wearing masks they would see you can usually get used to them. I work in a care home and we don't all skip around singing about how wonderful it is to wear masks. We're happy when we can take them off but we understand why we wear them. To protect the most vulnerable.

Not even trying to get used to wearing them reminds me of children and some adults refusing to eat their vegetables because they "just know" they don't like them even though they have never tried them.

If you’re not going to enjoy it, don’t go. I think that’s what you’ve decided, and that seems perfectly reasonable.

In general, I am so weary of the anti-mask nonsense. That isn’t directed at the OP, but at the idiotic drama llamas who bray loudly about being muzzled or their freedom being restricted, etc. 🙄 Most people can and should wear masks in situations where social distancing is impossible. No one likes it. So what? They should do it anyway (with exemptions for those who can’t wear masks, of course).

ZoeTurtle · 19/09/2020 15:03

FFS! On MN, you have to wear a mask and like it. Fuck that.

The point is that NOBODY likes wearing a mask. But only some of us are so so self-absorbed that we whinge about it constantly.

katy1213 · 19/09/2020 15:11

Well, go - or don't go - your choice, not much point whinging about it here. A few weeks ago, there wasn't anything to go to.

Comefromaway · 19/09/2020 16:49

YANBU. Don’t go. You won’t enjoy it.

(Then I can go without having to endure your dd singing along)

I think (though I will check first) that you are allowed to sing along to Megasix only.

In Hamilton you are allowed to sing along to da da da da da when King George says Everybody and one other place.

If everyone waits until things return to 'normal' there may not be any musicals to go to.

VirginiaWolverine · 19/09/2020 17:05

If you wouldn't enjoy the show because of the mask, then you are absolutely right not to go. I'm very scared of heights, and often miss out on things I would enjoy because they involve heights. And I have a severe nut allergy and miss out on stuff I would enjoy because if that, too. It's great when people make accommodation for me, but sometimes they don't, or it isn't possible at a particular moment in time, and that's just something we have to live with sometimes.

I don't think everyone is waiting though. Most people don't mind wearing a mask enough to not go.

@WaterOfADucksCrack - but that is not what this thread is about - nor if you read the angry replies early on at the OP, what those posters are angry about, no where has the OP said she wouldn't wear a mask, or thinks she shouldn't have to wear a mask. Just that she's debating (and now decided) to not do something she normally would enjoy because wearing a mask would make it unenjoyable.

That should be fine. Except for some people, expressing not liking wearing masks is treated the same as saying you won't wear one.

Mask wearing needs to be factored in. Its been over a month since we all started wearing them indoors, ita been too long for posters saying "you'll get used to it", some people have been wearing them lots and still hate it.

The OP is entirely right to wait until its going to feel like the treat a theatre trip should be.
