To redecorate so soon?

We bought our house in which everything always a good 30 years old - no new paint on the walls or new toilets etc. So it desperately needed doing. So we completely redecorated. New bathroom suites, every room painted, new floors, new kitchen. Everything. We couldn't afford to do any extensions or anything, just modernising everything.

But.... Now I've unexpectedly come into some inheritance money. Enough to do the extension that I wanted. But it feels wrong because we've only had the new decor done so recently.

It would mean re doing to bathrooms and two bedrooms that we've literally just had done.

Should we live with it for a while just so it wasn't all a complete waste of money? How long?

Alternatively the longer we wait to extend the less time we will get in a bigger house so less value for money time wise?

Help!

With the money already spent, google the “sunk cost fallacy”. If you will get a decent benefit from the extension and would have done it earlier if you’d had the money, then it makes sense to go ahead with it now despite the money already spent.

I'd extend now. You possibly could reuse some of the things you have bought.

Thank you 😊

The thought of redecorating fills me with dread. I think it stems from childhood, mum repeatedly did one room after another, money was tight and as kids we couldn't have cared less. Parents always rowed and we could have benefitted better with the money than rooms looking nice but not nice enough to stay like that.
I rarely redcorate as a result, i take my time and choose well as know that it won't be changed..
The kitchen could do with an overhaul but last year we repainted and made new curtains which gave a facelift, that was after 20 years +,.
I guess I would rather spend the money on other things .
Our living room must be done about 30 years and is pretty much ok .
I think my dear mum put me off for life.

It also depends on when your builder of choice can start - we waited nearly a year for ours! If it is in six months or so (and you might want to wait until early spring to make it more bearable) then you might feel better about it.

If you definitely want it done, then do it. No point in putting it off just because you didn't think you'd be able to afford it so soon! Smile
