Positive smear result therefore can't give blood

Does anyone know why this is? I had CIN 2 years ago, have given blood many times since. Suddenly I'm being told I can't register to be a blood donor because I had a lletz for CIN 2 in 2011 after a positive smear result. Can't seem to find much on Google...

I’ve never heard of this either!

I've given blood routinely dozens and dozens of times in the last 10 years and suddenly I can't. Not sure why but it was quite upsetting being turned away!

Apparently I can't give bone marrow either which I have done once before. I'd love to know the science behind it.

Contact NHSBT on social media - they are very good at replying.

my.blood.co.uk/KnowledgeBase/Index/C

This is direct from their website

On that site it says you can give blood once you've had a clear smear test. I've had many, but was still turned away.

Do they think you have the HPV virus?

That's what causes a lot of issues re: smears...

lasangoles · 17/09/2020 15:00

I don't have HPV. It was negative at my smear test.

Also doesn't most of the population have HPV, untested? Certainly the older end. It's why they don't vaccinate the older types, it's too late.

Conkergame · 17/09/2020 15:09

Sounds niche. But I wouldn’t be upset about it. They just want to keep people safe.

LivePositively · 17/09/2020 15:16

I had treatment for CIN2 about 15 years ago and have given blood several times. I've never been asked about smear or HPV when going to give blood.

Dollywilde · 17/09/2020 15:19

I had CIN2 three years ago and a clear smear test after a LLETZ treatment, I asked about it at my next donation session and they said so long as my most recent smear was fine I was good to donate. Has this changed recently maybe? I’ve just had a baby so haven’t donated in a year. Would be a shame if I was now not allowed, as an O negative they’re constantly hassling me for blood!

lasangoles · 17/09/2020 15:20

I'm also ONeg. Possibly it has changed, I'm not sure!
