to find it very dodgy that an "18 yr old" boy has contacted a 13 yr old DD thru Netlog.com and wants to know if she has msn..

she only set up the profile yesterday and only put her name, a very innocent pic of her face and the fact that she adores gymnastics.

He sends her a "private message"... the only thing he says is does she have msn. His photo on his profile makes him look older than 18 but hell, what do I know!!

No offence intended to 18 yr old boys, and maybe I've been reading too many articles about "grooming" kids on the internet.

But are normal 18 yr old chaps REALLY that interested in 13 yr olds?

Am I BU? I really don't know but I just can't help feeling suspicious. Or am I nuts?

No you are not nutes.

I would be the same.

Unsure about 18 year olds being interested in 13 year olds. 18 year old generally lust after older women methinks.

SenoraPostrophe · 08/10/2007 20:05

is her age on her profile?

some saddos really do just like to msn random people but I don't really think that's appropriate for a 13 yr old. she should be hanging out at the pub and getting off with 18 yr old lads there like we did.

mrsmerton · 08/10/2007 20:06

I would BLOCK this person straight away, you can never be too sure.

IMO its not a good idea for anyone to put pics of themselves on the web, you never know who is looking, or what information your child may innocently give away.

My dd is always on MSN, or BEBO or whatever its called. I watch over her shoulder most of the time!

ScaryScaryNight · 08/10/2007 20:07

Most paedos start out around 18. They are intersted in girls age 13 and younger.

Cool · 08/10/2007 20:08

My nephew is 13 year old and is the same, using his Bepo site, I hope it has been banned or something by the time my dc grow up.

Monitor her muchly!!!!

fawkeoff · 08/10/2007 20:09

get him blocked and monitor all computer activity closely

SenoraPostrophe · 08/10/2007 20:11

"most peados start at 18" really? how do you know? is a 16 year old lad who goes out with a 13 yr old a peadophile?

the op doesn't even say that the girls age is on her profile.

dolally · 08/10/2007 20:14

I HATE these websites, bepo and Hi5 and all the rest of them... they just seem so exploitative of kids, though I guess I'm just a killjoy.

She did put her age and a very innocent photo. And she says she never replies to people she doesn't know. She won't be replying to this one, though I'm tempted to... pretending to be her and see what he tries.

I've told them all NEVER to put personal info and the older ones to never put any photo's they wouldn't want their teacher, grandma, or future employer to see!

God knows why but the local school have taken an excluded pupil from another secondary: he's 17 and been sleeping with a year 7. Weirdos don't all have to be 45 yrs old & in dirty raincoats.

In your case I would block him. Whether he's 18 or actually older, his interest in a 13 year old girl is uncomfortable.

dolally · 08/10/2007 20:21

that's it really, even if he's just a saddo, it's certainly not normal is it?

DD says she wouldn't have replied to him, but it just highlights how vulnerable these kids are to all this inappropriate stuff. AI try very hard to monitor...

...as if we all haven't got enough to do!

I feel quite angry actually, too

And then you have the guys who pretends to be young teenage girls keen on Hello Kitty and rabbits.... Who strikes up friendships over time, gather information such as local football team, etc just to pin the girls down..... not scaremongering....

dolally · 08/10/2007 22:29

Yep scary.

I find these blardy sites, Hi5 etc..so seedy and sad, just browsing thru people's profiles you come across photo's of sad exhibitionists with their kit off. And that's the LEAST sinister part.

I read an article recently by some journalists who actually set up a profile on one of these sites, pretending to be a young teenage girl. Within a very short time they had a contact from a guy claiming to a be a teenager. What happens is the new friend then asks you if you're on msn, you say yes so you both go there and have a conversation. Then he asks for your phone number...asks you if your parents are about ... on one of these occasions the new friend started sending the "teenage girl" pornography, on another they made an appointment to meet up and the reporters were there are the meeting place...of course the guy did a runner.
