Call in sick with a cold

AIBU?

I have a cold, a really bad one my nose is streaming, my throat feels like razor blades and I barely got a wink of sleep.

To clarify I am working from home so this is not a Covid risk thing and I know it's just a cold.

But... I am pregnant. And I am already exhausted due to anemia diagnosed by the hospital a couple of weeks ago. And now with this on top, I feel like actually crying at the thought of sitting and doing a full days work half asleep at my computer and ill. I am so, so tired.

Absolutely phone in sick! I own a business and I would fully expect you to in the circumstances you described! Feel better soon.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 17/09/2020 07:32

For goodness sake, call in sick, you sound really ill

BadgertheBodger · 17/09/2020 07:33

Call in sick! Colds hit me like a train when I was pregnant I had 4 days off for one. Hope you feel better soon

RunnyNose · 17/09/2020 07:34

I just wasn't sure considering I'm working from home anyway so no chance of passing anything on and I've seen people get really judgey when others phone in sick for 'just a cold'!

I would call in sick. It is worse for you as you are limited to what medication you can take with being pregnant. Feel better soon.

stillhayley · 17/09/2020 07:36

@RunnyNose this is me right now!! I feel awful and I've had no sleep due to a nasal drip making me cough! I come downstairs at about 3am because I didn't want to wake my family up. Don't feel bad, definitely call in sick and rest!

Also, what have you been taking? I think I might be pregnant so bit worried about what I can take x

This is the problem I'm having! I would kill for a lemsip but apparently you can't take them when pregnant so the box says!

DH has gone out to get some lemon and honey but could do with something medicated really.

I wouldn’t call in sick. Get a shower and a coffee or tea and see how you feel in an hour. It’s probably just morning fatigue but if you still don’t feel up to it then call in. Depends how often you general call in really!

ShebaShimmyShake · 17/09/2020 07:43

Why wouldn't you phone in sick with a nasty, heavy cold? It doesn't have to be life threatening for you to be unfit for work today.

I think it's the fact I'm WFH that made me question. If I was having to go into the office I would no question.

@stillhayley tbh I've only really been taking none medicated lozenges for my throat and some paracetamol. I'm going to try and speak to MW today and see what's okay.

Definitely phone in sick. You don’t sound in any fit state to be working.
Hot honey & lemon, a nice warm bath, cosy jammies & tuck yourself up into a big snuggly duvet and REST.

WildAboutMyPlanet · 17/09/2020 07:58

Call in sick. It drives me nuts that people are made to feel like they can’t be unwell, the world is so damn competitive about working when really, you should take a day or two off to get better because if you don’t you only feel worse for longer.

Look after yourself and enjoy a day with no work and focus on getting well again. X

JalapenoDave · 17/09/2020 08:02

Call in sick OP. Get well soon Flowers

ShebaShimmyShake · 17/09/2020 08:15

Work is more than the commute. You won't be productive, you've got a nasty bug. You'll get better sooner and be productive again if you just rest up today with honey and lemon.

Heyahun · 17/09/2020 08:19

Oh god I feel your pain! Pregnant too and just over a cold! I Was asleep for nearly 2 full days u able to do a thing! I went to the office yesterday for the first tine In a few weeks - and had to go to bed the minute I got home was so exhausted! So deffo just take a break x

stillhayley · 17/09/2020 09:36

@RunnyNose I've had some paracetamol and I've got some hot water with honey and lemon in it- hoping this does the trick!

stillhayley · 17/09/2020 09:36

@RunnyNose hope you feel better soon xx

AntiHop · 17/09/2020 09:41

If you can't get hold of a midwife, try calling your local pharmacy to ask what you can take when pregnant.

Ps after baby is born, look at the breastfeeding network for advice on what you can take if you breastfeed. I found that pharmacists and doctors often say no to medications when breastfeeding when that's not true. The breastfeeding network has a specialist pharmacist who had specialist knowledge.

ChaChaCha2012 · 17/09/2020 09:42

Get some rest. There's a big MN thing that you must work through it, but a cold covers a whole range of symptoms and severity. You're not going to get better if you don't let your body recuperate.

LonelyFromCorona · 17/09/2020 09:50

Try to be convincing or your boss might think its a sickie

Dee1975 · 17/09/2020 11:49

Sounds like you need to get to bed ...

LunchBoxPolice · 17/09/2020 11:54

Yanbu.
I’m 30 weeks pregnant and have a cold and honestly it’s the worst I’ve ever felt from a cold.
I’ve been taking paracetamol and drinking green tea with honey and lemon. Try to keep your fluids up, it makes a big difference. Hope you feel better soon
