Literally everyone in my family now has a cold!! First DD got it, then me, then DH and now the rest of remaining family.

What is going on!

Yep. My whole family have caught a cold. One by one. Not me. Yet. I’m next though I know it. Caught from school in the first few days.

Pinkski · 15/09/2020 23:32

I work for the nhs and in schools, back on face to face visits at the start of term in full PPE for all contacts and I have an awful streaming cold, now with a cough. Must have picked it up on my first or second day!

I get a lot of bugs because of the nature of my job but not usually this early in the school year or this bad. Due to be tested tomorrow but would be very surprised if it’s COVID. We knew it would only be a matter of time before we picked something up but it’s wiping a lot of teachers and nhs staff who work in schools out as well as parents and children.

Plus everybody’s scared of going out in public with so much as a sniffle in case they get judged!

Noti23 · 15/09/2020 23:41

I have a cold. Obviously my mask, social distancing and excessive hand washing is no match for the common cold- hopefully it will be worth my while when someone eventually snorts Covid over me...

Noti23 · 15/09/2020 23:43
  • should add that I have no school aged children and both me and dp work from home. I can’t figure out for the life of me how I caught something!
catsarecute · 15/09/2020 23:47

Shows schools are nowhere near 'covid secure' if colds are spreading like wildfire in them. You'd think with all the measures being taken it would reduce spread a bit.

Daisyflower12345 · 16/09/2020 10:04

My DD doesn't even go to Nursery lol an she was the first to get the cold and pass it onto the rest of the family.

Schools are struggling a bit I heard today : sanitizer wasn't put in the dinner hall for staff and people are told to bring their own. The cleaning bills are too much for many schools to pay out for and it's becoming a 'cutting of corners ' already. Nobody's fault really , but I'm sure it will only get worse!
I'm sure many will take their own in but it's all going to be goodwill again.

HughGrantsHair · 16/09/2020 10:17

I work in a school and get a cold every September. But this year it's knocked me for six. I've had a test and waiting for the results but I'm pretty sure I've got the flu.

I normally carry on with the common cold but this year I'm so glad I had to self isolate. I slept on and off for 2 days. Ache all over. Ribs hurt from coughing.

Wish I could get my covid results quicker though so my children can get back to school if it's negative. They're absolute fine but have had to miss 3 days so far.

The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 10:24

Of course nurseries and schools and colleges are not totally covid secure. Any more than they are common cold secure. Anyone who believes this are deluded and i'm not school bashing : it's just an impossible situation all round!

TheSoapyFrog · 16/09/2020 10:32

Kids have all gone back to school. A cold spreads like wildfire. They bring it home and it spreads some more.
Possibly because we've all been at home isolating and paying extra attention to washing hands and disinfecting stuff, our immune systems aren't as strong as they usually would be.

Whatafustercluck · 16/09/2020 10:38

Same here. It's no wonder the Covid system is falling over - people need to go to work and school, not keep returning to self isolation for cold symptoms that can be confused with Covid. It's not as if the government didn't know that autumn/ winter and the return of schools would cause an uplift in testing demand.

I live in fear of one of the DC coming down with a normal, seasonal virus that causes a cough. And that means we're naturally becoming less sociable anyway as we can't afford to have to self isolate until a negative result as a result of catching a cold.

Whatafustercluck · 16/09/2020 10:39

testing system, not Covid system.

The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 11:17

Some of the employees in our school are paying lip service to all this as they know the kids mix outside school and how germs are impossible to avoid. A few are covid deniers too I'm sure.
It's not easy and it will be so hard to know who is just poorly and who has the real thing. Testing seems hit and miss too and some might not even bother!

MsEllany · 16/09/2020 11:20

Do you not expect this when we’ve been sequestered for months and using masks and now kids are back at school and not?!

Sure as Christmas comes in December, colds come in September Grin

Rosebel · 16/09/2020 11:56

My 14 year old has caught something and now me and my youngest daughter have started coming down with it. Not sure if it's a cold as it's just her throat thats bad.
So far my husband has avoided it and so has our baby but both sets of next door neighbours and my sister and niece have colds.
It's a nightmare not knowing if you have to isolate or not.

portico · 23/09/2020 12:03

DS had sore tonsil. A GP appointment with a useless doctor; because she was just pushing for the CV test. We did yesterday and son thankfully had a negative test result. I did ask what can you do to diagnose his throat once a negative result came. She had no answer. The NHS is useless; normal inpatient and outpatient and operations aren’t being performed. What do we need it for. Btw I know what I am talking about. I worked in it for 2 years, and my partner works in it for almost 30 years. We should not mythologise the NHS - when it was needed, we found it was not up to the task

knittingaddict · 23/09/2020 12:19

I've got a cold and husband has one too now. It's a "back to school" one caught from our grandchildren.

AriettyHomily · 23/09/2020 12:21

@LittleBearPad

Freshers flu doesn’t mean a hangover.
Freshers flu isn't a hangover!

Ha spoke too soon
Everyone has a cold now. Eldest has tonsils as well. Still luckily no coughs which is a relief.
