The word 'cunt'

Theroadtomandalay · 15/09/2020 17:35

Why is it, 'cunt' is an accepted word to use when calling other people names?

I know that is not 'nice' to do so, but it seems like a 'non frowned upon' term to use in informal settings if someone is really really horrible.

I really don't get it! Why use a (very important) part of the female anatomy to insult someone.

For me it seems like the ultimate way to demean a woman's body, and I am so surprised, when other women use that word.
However, I am not from an english speaking country, so perhaps I am missing something- please enlighten me.

I think that it is a completely unacceptable word to use, personally. None of my friends use it, why would you, its horrible.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/09/2020 18:35

What is "tit" based on? As in you are a tit.

Boob or bird?

WildAboutMyPlanet · 15/09/2020 18:35

Someone (a man) once told me that it’s ‘not very ladylike’ to use the word cunt. Get fucked you massive hairy twat, is that better?

TOFO1965 · 15/09/2020 18:37

I love the word. And sometimes it is the only one that will do!

Iknowthingsthatwillhappen · 15/09/2020 18:37

But then the language on Mumsnet is pretty vile altogether really............................ Sad

Macncheeseballs · 15/09/2020 18:38

Hate it, it's the one word I would never want my kids to hear/say

Soapysoap · 15/09/2020 18:41

It's my favourite swearword. Goes so well with other words too. I particularly love using "you dirty cunting cuntfucking cunty bastard cunt'
Usually directed at whatever item I just dropped on my toe.

DieSchottin93 · 15/09/2020 18:43

Another Scot who can confirm it's almost a term of endearment here Grin

user1481840227 · 15/09/2020 18:44

I really don't get it! Why use a (very important) part of the female anatomy to insult someone.

I call people dicks or assholes or the time Grin

cuparfull · 15/09/2020 18:50

Only people of limited vocabulary swear.

frogswimming · 15/09/2020 18:50

I don't like it. I think it's one of the worst swear words. I use dick, knob, ball bag, bellend etc etc But I don't like cunt, or shit. I have to say poo instead of shit. No logic to that really.

Runmybathforme · 15/09/2020 18:51

I hate this word, and I’m very sweary. It’s ugly and I never use it.

honigbutter · 15/09/2020 18:52

I've spent nearly all my long life in Scotland, have never used the word nor do I hear it among my friends and acquaintances.

Those who claim it's every second word don't speak for me.

Henrysfakebarns · 15/09/2020 18:52

Do your think calling someone an arse also demeans the female body? After all, we have arses!

MagicSummer · 15/09/2020 18:52

I hate this word - and most other derogatory terms for parts of the human body. Just why? They say swearing is used when you don't have an extensive vocabulary!

EKGEMS · 15/09/2020 18:53

In the States here it's not a common insult and if you call a female the c word then you are really asking for an ass kicking

everythingisginandroses · 15/09/2020 18:53

An insult, a term of endearment (well. almost, as above), a vague descriptor "They cunts over there..." A hardcore band's t-shirt saying 'Kill Every Cunt' in huge letters. Yes, I too can confirm it's all that and more if you come from anywhere between Edinburgh and Glasgow Grin Truly a portmanteau word for all seasons.

The other night DH was watching Frankie Boyle with the sound down low and the subtitles on, and I walked into the room to see the word 'Cuntland' in the middle of the screen. I absolutely cracked up!

ameliajoan · 15/09/2020 18:54

How is this even an issue? Confused Mountain, meet molehill.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/09/2020 18:55

@cuparfull

Only people of limited vocabulary swear.
I have vocabulary of 3 languages. Not limited in either. I swear.

Intelligent people may swear more AND and, now I quote,: "Rather than being the sign of someone with a limited vocabulary, the study – published in the Language Science journal back in November 2015 – found that swearing proficiency was a sign of rhetorical strength."

Bluntness100 · 15/09/2020 18:57

It’s acceptable on here. But not normally in real life. It is defined as the second most offensive word, with the n word coming first.

I use it rarely and would agree it is offensive. I’d not tolerate someone calling me a cunt. So I don’t do it to others.

Language evolves, meanings change. Cunt in that context means "a despicable person" to many, not "a vagina." HTH

So when the word gay changed meaning to be a general derogatory insult was that ok?

I don't like the word being used as an insult, no.

Yes, I too can confirm it's all that and more if you come from anywhere between Edinburgh and Glasgow

I’m from there, and I grew up in a council estate with some rough characters, but oddly also have middle class friends /family. And I can assure you no one but the very very roughest was running around calling each other cunts

I really hate when people try to describe Scotland as this sort of place. Full of fucking savages running around calling every one a cunt

ivfbeenbusy · 15/09/2020 19:00

I'm not sure in what circles you mix but it's not acceptable to use that word in the circles I mix in

People use it for one of two reasons 1 - they think they are "cool" and using it for shock value 2 - they are chavs with a poor command of the English language
