The word 'cunt'

Theroadtomandalay · 15/09/2020 17:35

Why is it, 'cunt' is an accepted word to use when calling other people names?

I know that is not 'nice' to do so, but it seems like a 'non frowned upon' term to use in informal settings if someone is really really horrible.

I really don't get it! Why use a (very important) part of the female anatomy to insult someone.

For me it seems like the ultimate way to demean a woman's body, and I am so surprised, when other women use that word.
However, I am not from an english speaking country, so perhaps I am missing something- please enlighten me.

It’s definitely acceptable in Scotland Grin

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 15/09/2020 18:17

@DeeTractor

Don't ever come to the west of Scotland, OP. You may faint.
Grin, not just the west, either!

My native language has number of swear words like cunt, dick, arse. As far as I know every language has swear words based on body parts. Some have insults based on organs even😂

As people said though. Language evolves.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/09/2020 18:18

Half the world's population have cunts.

Half the world's population are cunts.😂

Sheknowsaboutme · 15/09/2020 18:19

Its a term of endearment in north wales-one town esp.

gingerbeerandlemonade · 15/09/2020 18:20

Because it sounds more effective. But I know lots of men who say dick or knob. I occasionally use it when there is no other word to describe someone. It doesn't offend me as a woman.

woodlandwalker · 15/09/2020 18:22

I know that a lot of people use the word lightly, in a joking way, though I don't much like it.
People do use it as an insult and it is the worst word anyone can use when they are attacking you. I would never use it and find it most unpleasant.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 15/09/2020 18:24

I never use 'cunt' as an insult because it's part of a woman's body and I respect it. That's probably part of my second-wave feminist outlook.

KeepOnMovingForwards · 15/09/2020 18:24

I have no real issue with the word. I don't use it often as I know it offends people more than most.
For me, the worst words are those that have origins in disabilist terms. I will judge someone for using those words (The "R" and the former name of scope charity one especially) more than I would someone saying cunt.

Totally agree and actually had this exact conversation with a girl at university who constantly used the R word. She hated the word cunt and I said R word was way more offensive. Which it is.

@MrsSugar

I’m from Glasgow. I hear it constantly. Any cunt got a lighter? There’s some cunt on the phone for you? He’s a cheeky cunt. He’s a good cunt Blush awful really but I don’t bat an eyelid about the word although I don’t use it much
This made me howl. BIL is Glaswegian (I am Scottish but not Glasgow) and he uses it constantly, even when discussing politics!! Nae cunt wants the Tories in; some cunt on the radio talking shite about Brexit. It’s sort of de-personalised to a group of people if that makes sense. He would never call an individual a cunt as in “ you are a cunt” but he always refers to “nae cunt” (no-one); “some cunt” (someone) and “they cunts” (those people).

Agree with others who say they can’t understand why it’s considered worse than dick, prick, arse, knob etc. It’s just 4 letters.

WorraLiberty · 15/09/2020 18:29

I have fond memories of my mate's Cockney Gran who was 4ft 10", squaring up to her landlord and saying, "You saucy little cunt" 😂😂😂

StarchyStanley · 15/09/2020 18:29

Aw I miss "nae cunt...". I love scotland. Wish I still lived there, so much.

Georgyporky · 15/09/2020 18:30

Language changes.
It was regarded as the worst word in English when I was growing up.
I still don't use it, & was surprised to see it freely bandied about on MN.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 15/09/2020 18:30

My H is an East Coast Scot. He had a cat when we started dating whom he called 'wee cunt'.

dicksplash · 15/09/2020 18:31

I hate the word and in my area and generation it really isn't an acceptable word to use.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 15/09/2020 18:32

North scotland here, every second word is cunt, it's generally a term of endearment here (not always though) we have much better words for people we hate Grin I love the word.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/09/2020 18:32

What I never understand (on Mumsnet in particular) is how people who probably call themselves feminists, can use a word that means female genitalia, as a term of particularly virulent abuse.

I don’t find it ‘just a word’ - it’s not one I’d ever use.

Lol at this with your username !!
percheron67 · 15/09/2020 18:33

Why on earth do you think it is acceptable?! I certainly would not use it and find it totally unacceptable.

Maybe not but I love your nickname! 😂
JinglingHellsBells · 15/09/2020 18:35

(Why is it, 'cunt' is an accepted word to use when calling other people names?*

It's not.

And certainly not with my friends or my adult children's circle.
I've never ever said it in my life only to quote something I've heard elsewhere.
