Nursery tomorrow. DD Cough

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 00:08

DD has been back at nursery one week.. I was on furlough from April to September.. Just returned last week. She's had a runny nose the past couple of days, but was OK to go in as had no temperature.. She's now coughing.. But again no temperature, seems well in herself. Should I keep her off or send her in? Don't think my employer will be too pleased if I can't work tomorrow 😭😭😭

If its a persistent cough then I'm afraid you'll need to keep her off until you can get a test. If its a standard cough that you get with a cold, probably not, but I'd err on the side of caution.

So many families are going through the same at the moment. New terms always rife with viruses but this year it's going to have a bigger impact on all of us.

doubleshotespresso · 15/09/2020 00:16

Awful though it is for you I'm afraid you should keep her off.... sorry if this isn't what you want to hear!
Hope she gets well soon

CountessFrog · 15/09/2020 00:16

If send her in unless the cough seems continuous.

WithGusto · 15/09/2020 00:27

You’ll only be called to come and get her as soon as they hear it. Don’t break the rules you don’t know what it is. And you know you shouldn’t be doing it. Your employer knows what the rules are as well so there shouldn’t be a problem.

Get a test booked tomorrow, hopefully it’ll be negative.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 15/09/2020 00:29

@CountessFrog it only needs to be have been persistent for an hour for it to be classed as continuous and needing checking ( im a nurse ).

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 15/09/2020 00:31

**Or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours .

Hannsmum · 15/09/2020 00:33

Been worried about this exact same thing. DS started nursery last week.had a runny nose. They said it was ok and i would only be called in if he has a cough.

Thursday evening, he started coughing (luckily he doesn't go to nursery Friday).

So i did my best to upp his immune system and the cough went down drastically to only coughing once in 6 hours and i wasnt called in today

Honestly its so nerve wracking because kids have colds and coughs all the time and you are just at the edge every time

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 00:33

I thought if it was if she had a temperature she couldn't go in.. Sorry I've been off work so long I didn't know.. She's caught this bloody cold of nursery that's the worst thing. Just given her calpol and bought her into my bed x

She had a cough so you need to treat it as suspected Covid.

This “continuous” crap just confuses the issue. We all know what “having” a cough means.

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 00:35

@hannsmum how did you upp his immune system x

I'm reading conflicting information online. It says if she has a runny nose along with a cough then it should be OK. It's very definitely a cold, she's not had a temperature at all. I just don't want to take her in if that's against the rules and as you say I'll just be called to pick her up. It is a cold, she's only developed it in the last few days after being off for months with me..

my niece was acoughing with her cold they didnt send her home no problems since

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 00:49

They even handed her over to me yesterday on pick up and said she's a bit bunged up but generally fine in herself. Will see how she is in the morning x

You need to keep her off!!

Ghostoast · 15/09/2020 00:58

I'm sick to death of people trying to find excuses to send their kids into work and hoping for the best and that they aren't sent home, it's enough to infect a whole bloody nursery.

olderthanyouthink · 15/09/2020 01:06

DD went to nursery for the first time last week now she's coughing enough to make her sick, CV test is coming but she's going to be like this till summer, feels like I'm going to pay for a lot of unused nursery and be stuck in the house a lot Sad

schafernaker · 15/09/2020 01:10

Please don’t send her in even if you have the slightest concern about her symptoms. One child at my daughters nursery tested positive meaning all the kids who had been in with them then had to self isolate for 2 days, it cost us a fortune in unused nursery fees and unpaid time off work to look after her. There was nothing wrong with our DD thankfully

You obviously dont. The rules are a new continuous cough. You only need to isolate and test if its like this ...

coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

Are you in the UK? Normal protocol if you're a close contact of a positive case then you isolate for 14 days.
ginnybag · 15/09/2020 06:51

OP, if the symptoms are runny nose and cough, why the calpol?

Please don't send her if she's got symptoms. Yes, it's likely its a cold but the reality is, you can't know without a test.

DappledThings · 15/09/2020 07:01

DS has had an couple of colds over the last few weeks. Worse in the morning where he coughs a bit but sneezes more till he clears a load of snot then mostly fine till then next day. When he was at nursery he started about 7.15 so they definitely would have heard him being all snotty and coughing/sneezing. Never sent him or mentioned it.

They've been very sensible all the way through and not assumed that standard cold symptoms = test and isolation.

bobbiester · 15/09/2020 07:12

The rules are quite clear. You are supposed to get her tested as she has a cough, and the whole household should self-isolate until you get the result...

www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test

Nobody in the house should be going to work , school, nursery.

schafernaker · 15/09/2020 07:14

@Torvean32sorry yes, I meant 2 weeks 🙈

Snackasaurus · 15/09/2020 07:16

If you send her to nursery, she will get sent home.

taradiddle · 15/09/2020 07:17

You do know it's quite possible to have a cold and Covid at the same time? If you have a new persistent cough, you test and isolate - end of.
