Nursery tomorrow. DD Cough

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 00:08

DD has been back at nursery one week.. I was on furlough from April to September.. Just returned last week. She's had a runny nose the past couple of days, but was OK to go in as had no temperature.. She's now coughing.. But again no temperature, seems well in herself. Should I keep her off or send her in? Don't think my employer will be too pleased if I can't work tomorrow 😭😭😭

@Hannsmum you need to get a test or isolate if your child has had a persistent cough.

Why do people think they can bend the rules?

Silvercatowner · 15/09/2020 07:44

OP, if the symptoms are runny nose and cough, why the calpol?

OP... answer the irrelevent (typically Mumsnetty) question.

shreddednips · 15/09/2020 07:51

As far as I know, the rules are if you have either a cough or a temperature or loss of taste and smell, you have to get tested. So a cough without temperature still needs testing. I feel your pain as we're all currently self isolating waiting for toddler DS results, my gut instinct is that it's a cold but because he had a cough and a temperature (as he always does with a cold) he had to be tested. But I also accept that although I think I can tell it's a cold, I may well be totally wrong Grin

Boatingforthestars · 15/09/2020 07:52

Our daughter also has a cold and an associated cough.
Everytime she gets a cold she ends up with a cold for weeks afterwards.

So tried ringing 111 last night at 1800 for advice, it's now 0745 the following morning and we are still waiting for a call back.
My partner rang the testing number and they said it's upto us if we choose to get her tested or not, followed by there is not test centres currently available and home testing is also not available either.

So what do we do?
I'm sure she just has a normal cold, this is not unusual for her, although she only has a cough with a cold.
I will possibly keep her off nursery tomorrow when shes due in next.

It's no wonder the numbers are on the rise though when its impossible to get a straight answer of what you should/shouldnt do. Originally you only had to isolate if you had 2 symptoms, the cough and the temperature.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/09/2020 07:58

Depends on the cough- my LO has started the odd cough but it’s not continual and I can hear phelm

Boatingforthestars · 15/09/2020 08:01

But what is the definition of continuous though? As it also states more than 3 times in 24hrs. Even the most minor cough would have you coughing atleast 3 times in 24hrs.

Elephantday82 · 15/09/2020 08:02

@Torvean32 - that’s the advice we’ve been given. A persistent cough and a temperature. If every little cough got sent home there would be no one at school!

recededpronunciation · 15/09/2020 08:06

@Boatingforthestars It’s 3 episodes of coughing in 24 hours, not 3 individual coughs

I agree it's not overly clear? DD is 4 and came down with a cold yesterday and colds always go on her chest. This morning she's coughed a few times? But a cough or two then she stops?

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 08:56

I've called the nursery this morning, they know she's developed the cold from there as she was perfectly fine prior to going back to nursery as she was off for months with me and she's only been there a week. Anyway, because she has no temperature ALONG with the cough it was OK to send her in, they do temperature checks at the door.. Her cough has since cleared up a little, it's not continuous at all. They said if she starts coughing continuously and gets a temperature I will be called. So I checked before sending her in. Appreciate there are parents who just send children in regardless of infecting others, my daughters health comes first hence why I posted last night and called the nursery this morning...if they are saying its OK then I will go with that any my a daughter is perfectly fine within herself.

@Elephantday82 that's what I've been told this morning.

Keep her home.

bobbiester · 15/09/2020 09:12

" Anyway, because she has no temperature ALONG with the cough it was OK to send her in"

It's not up to the nursery to decide to accept children with a cough but no temperature. If someone has ANY one of the following 3 symptoms they are supposed to get tested and stay home until the result is obtained. And the whole household is supposed to self-isolate too.

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature) OR
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual) OR
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

I've just come off the phone to 111, the lady said take her to my nearest walkin centre, when I questioned that, she changed her tune and suggested we contacted the doctor.
It seems that if you dont have common sense you will be spreading this virus to all and sundry on the advice if 111.

Boatingforthestars · 15/09/2020 12:03

So just spoke to our GP, he said because she has a cough we should all self isolate until we can get tested, unfortunately though there are no tests available.
So we are actually no better off now than we were in March.

ChronicCovid · 15/09/2020 12:12

The nursery are actually breaking the law. So irresponsible!

The irony here is: if parents keep sending their kids in with covid symptoms because they 'have to go to work", the whole nursery could be shut down indefinitely because of a covid outbreak and you'll then be isolating for two weeks. You can't get a test in those two weeks as you won't be showing symptoms yet, so two weeks minimum. But if you do the test with symptoms then you can turn it around in 2 or 3 days.

Yes I know it's an arse ache getting a test, but the alternative is having no nursery placement at all if covid shuts it down and/or potentially kills a member of staff.

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 12:52

It is.. Because there's no home testing kits, no availability at walk in centre or drive through.. So what are you supposed to do. Just spoken to nursery and my daughter is absolutely fine, hasn't been coughing at all. So not sure what's going on tbh.

hardboiledeggs · 15/09/2020 13:05

If it's a continuous cough then no she cant go to Nursery.

hardboiledeggs · 15/09/2020 13:06

It's one or the other or both .

OverTheRainbow88 · 15/09/2020 13:12

If you send her to nursery, she will get sent home.

My son has a cold and coughs occasionally, 3 weeks later still the same. Nursery hasn’t once mentioned it.

Jeezoh · 15/09/2020 13:14

I’d be VERY concerned the nursery are unable to understand the clear guidance that you only need to display ONE of the three symptoms to require a test Hmm

Haenow · 15/09/2020 13:19

YABU and these threads are going to be constant all autumn and winter. I know it’s unfair and annoying that tests aren’t available but people shouldn’t be sending in children with any of the symptoms described by the NHS.

Elephantday82 · 15/09/2020 14:36

@Puppy72

This was in the back to school pack and we were told those are the symptoms that require is to stay home and get a test

fiftiesmum · 15/09/2020 15:14

There will be a lot of families with sniffly children having to sit out the full 7/10/14/21 days of self-isolation/quarantine as no tests available. Latest theory is that they have been diverted to care homes.

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 15:41

I have no concerns about the nursery. They took her temperature at the door, my daughter is full of snot and is otherwise completely fine. It is not a continuous cough. It started last night on and off by the time I got her ready and on our way to nursery it stopped. They mentioned if she had a temperature she wouldn't have been able to come in. So far I've no call to tell me to pick her up. I think I've been a mother long enough to know when a cold is a cold..If she had a temperature and a continuous cough I'd have kept her home
