Would you/have you taken dc out of school for a day for a one off day trip/treat

Just that really - dc in yr 1, had pretty much 100% attendance in yr R, has no issues, sociable, doing well..

This wouldn’t have crossed my mind previously but following two recent experiences during summer hols and a weekend when we went to Legoland/Chessington and were faced with ridiculous queues of 1.5 hr plus for rides compared with how quiet those places are today (I’ve checked queue times in their apps) it does strike me that dc would’ve had a far better experience going school time mid week with me then catching up on a bit of schoolwork at the weekend.

I’d only intend on doing this once or twice a year, I don’t expect it will sit well with the school however so am just wondering if any of you have done this and how the schools responded, or how you dealt with it if going about it a different way.

Am new to the voting thing, but please vote yes if you’d do what I’m planning or no if you wouldn’t, thanks 🙏

No I wouldn't keep my kids out of school unless they were ill

There’s always one 🙄 No OP, YANBU.
TheDuchessofMalfy · 14/09/2020 11:55

At the moment I want to keep mine at school as much as possible, to get their education while the schools are open.

I8toys · 14/09/2020 11:56

YABU - especially as they've just gone back after a long absence and because you want a "better experience"

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 14/09/2020 11:56

I think you could get fined for doing this?

QuestionableMouse · 14/09/2020 11:57

He's five ish?

Then I absolutely would as a special treat. Life's too short.

SilverYellow · 14/09/2020 11:57

Nope, not unless it was educational and I couldn't go in the school holidays.

trilbydoll · 14/09/2020 11:57

We took dc out of school to go to Disneyland Paris a day earlier, that was definitely worth it. For more local days out I would just wait until an inset day.

Doingitaloneandproud · 14/09/2020 11:57

I have before, if it is a special occassion, ie a day out for their birthday. It doesn't happen often though

Soubriquet · 14/09/2020 11:57

Under normal circumstances, no I wouldn’t have a problem taking them out.

It means there’s less kids wherever we are going.

However, they have just had 6 months off school and my youngest who has just started year 1 desperately needs to catch up.

Maybe towards the end of year 1 I might do it but this early in the year, no

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/09/2020 11:58

We've taken our children out for holidays (one f which was Disneyland) before and may do again next year. Eldest in Yr3 in last occasion, Yr5 now.

Sometimes we need balance in life. As it is, our previous holidays have been authorised... It was when then their (Army) father had time off work.

shatteredmama · 14/09/2020 11:58

QuestionableMouse

Yes only 5, and that was my mindset too

Sirzy · 14/09/2020 11:58

In normal times maybe for a one off very special event that couldn’t be done during holidays/at weekends.

At the moment schooling is going to be disrupted enough without adding in extra days out

Brainfogmcfogface · 14/09/2020 11:58

Yes I would and before the pandemic I had a term time holiday booked and a treat day (both sun holiday/code deals so took what could get coz I is poor!) otherwise my kids simply wouldn’t be able to go to these places as I can’t afford them 🤷‍♀️

movingonup20 · 14/09/2020 11:59

No, school is important, theme parks not so much!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 14/09/2020 12:01

Yup done it a couple of weeks ago. Also let the oldest have a day of last week because he's really struggling and he was very stressed and upset. A day off did his mental health the world of good, and he went to school the next day with no problem.
Also taking them out for a week in November to go on holiday.

Nottherealslimshady · 14/09/2020 12:01

They've just had a tonne of time out of school. I'd say school is far more important than a theme park right now.

Figgygal · 14/09/2020 12:03

Nope I haven’t
ds now In yr4 and after the amount of school lost this year I wouldnt think about it

MushMonster · 14/09/2020 12:09

I do not think that is any good idea at all. Attendance is important. It teaches the child the value of education, and later workplace. How to deal with ones responsibilities, they come first, you only leave those in case of illness or other mayor issue. No for a day trip.

dannydyerismydad · 14/09/2020 12:10

I'm tempted. But I wouldn't.

DS completed every piece of work set by his school during lockdown to a great standard when plenty of other families had given up. I'd love to reward him with some nice days out as he's missed out on treats over the summer due to his dad shielding. But I don't dare.

mindutopia · 14/09/2020 12:13

In ordinary times, no, not to go to Legoland. But we did take dc out of school last week for 2 days for a family holiday. It was the only time we could book and after 6 very difficult months, I felt it was worth it for some joy and a chance to decompress. I probably wouldn't do it now though just for a day out as I think being in school is probably more valuable than a day out.

PolarBearStrength · 14/09/2020 12:14

I know I’m in the minority but if I had reasonably bright children who I felt wouldn’t really suffer from a skipped day, I probably would.

recklessruby · 14/09/2020 12:20

I did for ds s 6th birthday 26 years ago. We went to the cinema to see Free Willy and had a lovely day out.
I was 38 weeks pregnant with dd and wanted him to have a special day out just us before we had a new baby.
It really didnt affect his education and was a one off.
He still remembers it and the blow up tyrannosaurus rex we bought on the way home.
I d do it.

runningclearwater · 14/09/2020 12:21

I would but FGS don’t tell the school!

IamTomHanks · 14/09/2020 12:22

Yes of course. One day of school is not a big deal.
