The sheer joy of Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.

Its utterly wonderful. Happy, funny, poignant, and such obvious love and genuine friendship. Its gentle but absorbing.

I heard.....one of them, Paul Whitehouse I think, on Steve Wright a few weeks back talking about S3 so I rang my dad who is very into fishing and ma said that they had loved the first 2 series. I dont really watch TV so didnt know about it, but as she is as Meh about fishing as I am, I thought if she liked it then I would have a look on iPlayer and OMG I am hooked...pun intended!

I have watched all the available episodes twice and its now my go to if I am feeling down and need a bit of a lift (just dumped unsuitable BF, who I loved very much despite being wrong wrong wrong, so a fair few of those).

It genuinely gives me a happy heart to watch it :)

It's wonderful ❤️

Bob Mortimer is (IMO) just about the funniest person alive. Together, they are comedy gold. Combine that with beautiful scenery and quirky Britishness, it's just glorious.

WonderTweek · 13/09/2020 23:33

I love this programme! My husband and I watch it and always feel like slightly better people afterwards. Grin I've always been a fan of Whitehouse, and Mortimer is just a gem of a man. I would love to be friends with them. Halo

Notverybright · 13/09/2020 23:36

I love it so much, I’m planning to start fishing when the kids get older.

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/09/2020 23:40

I have found all the quirky places they have stayed in and need to have a serious save up to stay in them! At joint #1 is the bus and the train carriage!

Absolutely love it. It makes Sunday night for me.

It's lovely to see Bob without Vic Reeves/Jim Muir. Who I find repellent.

So relaxing.

I like this show as I'm a fan of both of them! It's so relaxing and they so clearly do get on really well. It's not false at all and the settings and rivers are amazing. They just chat away about life and loss.
I know nothing about fishing at all but it's a great little programme.

JovialNickname · 14/09/2020 18:42

I love this programme and I don't even like fishing, I just find it really enjoyable to watch. So British and gently funny, it's the perfect antidote to the horribleness of 2020!

derxa · 14/09/2020 18:53

I felt the same way about Grayson Perry's art club programme. Gentle escapism.
Paul Whitehouse is a genuinely talented man. He can even sing in opera mode.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/09/2020 18:58

We love this too, despite having no interest whatsoever in fishing. It always makes us laugh. It is a joy and a delight.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/09/2020 19:00

And wasn't last night's tree house fab?

Brizzle1991 · 14/09/2020 19:07

My go to relaxing programme is Our Yorkshire Farm😍But will give this one a go now as well👍

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 14/09/2020 19:20

Hate fishing, love this. Even my hard as nails ds who hates anything vaguely soppy was raising a smile Last night. We watched the one when they write each other’s elegies, it was lovely.

GreyHare · 14/09/2020 19:35

I love this too, I found it late into series one as it was on a late night repeat, but it is just 30 minutes of tranquility and joy and just watching two chaps just waffle at each other but you can tell they genuinely like each other, even though Bob tries Paul's patience at times, I like waiting for Bob to inevitably fall over.

iklboo · 14/09/2020 19:43

It's in the same kind of vein as The Detectorists. Gentle, funny, lovely scenery, camaraderie etc. Great 'it's been a crap day, put Gone Fishing on. I need to unwind'.

rosegoldwatcher · 14/09/2020 20:07

Bob Mortimer is my favourite person in the world (outside of family.)

I've just watched the first two episodes, I'd never heard of it before this thread. What a wonderful programme, laughed out loud and also made me think. Going to saviour the rest as soon as I can. Thank you OP (and other posters) you've put a little of joy into my life!
