18th Birthday

Not really an AIBU but posting here for traffic.

My DD is turning 18 next month. We have followed the rules throughout Covid-19 and will continue to do so.

So I'm looking for ideas, to make her birthday feel special. I've ordered a cake and will get balloons etc. What else can I do?

Just to add we are a family of four, so can only meet with two others.

Not quite the same as I have DS. I struggled to think of something but for his recent 18th, we (family 4) went clay pigeon shooting. Luckily it had just reopened. All Covid safe. Good fun and a new experience for us. Then pub lunch (with his first legal drink!), and pressies. Evening he was online gaming with mates. They are hoping to go camping overnight as a group of 6 to celebrate. Own tents so think it would meet guidelines. They just need to find a campsite to take them!

It really is hard. She has an older brother and we had a big family celebration when he turned 18.

She is really sensible and understands the restrictions and isn't asking for a party etc.

She at school in her birthday, so will see her friends who will make a fuss with cards etc.

I'm thinking of booking a hair and nail appointment the weekend before (she would like that). Then a family meal for the evening of her birthday and as you say maybe a party zoom session.

Presumably she can go out with up to 5 friends? My son is 18 in a few weeks and I didn't think it was going to be much of an issue. It's not like lockdown when you couldn't even meet a friend in the park and Zoom was as good as it got.

leafeater · 14/09/2020 08:23

We made cocktails GinWine

Littleelffriend · 14/09/2020 08:39

@cologne4711 you can’t meet with 6 different households, it’s 2 max presuming op is in the uk

WearyandBleary · 14/09/2020 08:42

Mine is going for a meal with friends and we are paying for a weekend away with her partner.

I am going to take her to the pub to buy me her first drink!! A joke I’ve been making for years...

TinyMetalBirds · 14/09/2020 08:49

@Littleelffriend - no, it is six different households, in England anyway.

Littleelffriend · 14/09/2020 09:04

@TinyMetalBirds apologies I’m in Scotland it’s only 2 households here

TinyMetalBirds · 14/09/2020 10:32

No problem, it is very confusing!

Movinghouse2015 · 14/09/2020 12:48

We are in Birmingham so will likely be in a local lockdown. So no friends will be able to come the house.

She is the first to be 18 amongst her friends. They can go out for a meal I guess or two friends can come and join us.

Can she not just celebrate it at a later date?

I know it’s rubbish but surely she’ll understand why.

Glee2020 · 14/09/2020 12:56

How about getting all friends and family to send you a small video message which you can then put into one video for them to play on their birthday
