Inclusive children’s books recommendations?

Sanitisethat · 13/09/2020 10:54

AIBU to ask for recommendations for inclusive / diverse / antiracist children and baby books? So far I have:

Sulwe
We’re different, we’re the same
Hair Love
Antiracist Baby

I feel we’ve made a reasonable start on books about racial diversity, so any ideas about books showing a range of family set ups, disability, inspirational women etc would be particularly appreciated.

TIA!

Thank you, these look great! I love Vashti Harrison’s illustrations so much in Sulwe, really excited to see more of her work.

You might want some books that show children of all different races doing normal things rather than just ones that specifically address racism iyswim? Off the top of my head we like Ten Tiny Babies, Bedtime With Ted (that’s part of a series), Mama Do You Love Me?, One Love (story version of the Bob Marley song)

Have heard good things about Rosie Revere, Engineer for older children

The Smeds and the Smoos, it's a Julia Donaldson about different coloured aliens who are very xenophobic until they realise the error of their ways.

This series is lovely, we've got the Diwali and Ramadan ones.

This bookstore in the US only has books featuring non white protagonists.

In an interview the founder said her and her son went to their local bookstore to find books with black main characters, not animal / Little Black Sambo types but where the protagonist just happened to be black - they found just five books in 2.5 hours so she created this website:

Thank you so much everyone, these are great - I really appreciate people taking the time to share them!
