To ask if you've done a PhD?

I got my Masters seven years ago and since then have been working freelance in the field.

Now I'm toying with the idea of doing a PhD, primarily because I love my subject (in the arts), but also because I'd love to branch out and teach at universities or on courses. The PhD would be in a subject that's closely related to my Masters, but not exactly the same, still in arts.

Do you have a PhD? Have you ended up in work that requires you to have it? Or did you end up not being able to use it professionally? I'm wondering if it's maybe a bad idea because of future university cuts etc. Any thoughts? How did you feel about your PhD, do you feel it was worth it, any regrets, etc?

Mine was great but you need to be clear eyed. You need much more than a PhD to teach at university level. You will need to publish and possibly secure funding. You need real discipline and resilience - it is mentally tough and long hours.
