She did it purpose, surely?

Went for lunch with a friend and she kindly offered me a lift home. In the car I told her I was expecting an important phone call from my granddaughters social worker and was she ok with me taking it in the car. She laughed and said it was fine and that I didn’t need to ask.

Surely enough SW rang and I answered. A few minutes into the conversation friend let out an almighty obnoxious belch. I swear I felt the car rumble. SW literally stopped talking mid sentence and then, after a few seconds of awkward silence she tried to carry on where she left off saying “ummm ... I’ve lost my train of thought, where was I?”

I was mortified. I don’t believe this was an accident so why would she do that? Or am I over thinking it?

I just hope SW didn’t think it was me.

Didn't you tell the social worker that it wasn't you?!

I would have said something. "Excuse you Jane, are you ok??? So sorry, Mrs X. Where were we?"

BastardBiscuits · 12/09/2020 08:06

No I was too shocked and embarrassed, it was totally out of character for her

fatgirlslimmer · 12/09/2020 08:08

SW probably thought it was you Grin

Olaplex · 12/09/2020 08:09

Why would she do it on purpose? Poor timing but just a coincidence, surely? It probably took her by surprise too.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 12/09/2020 08:10

I'm sure SWs have far worse problems to worry about.
Forget it.

Vehivle · 12/09/2020 08:11

Next time you see the social worker- maybe say "sorry it was so noisy on the call last time. My friend was driving and she had an upset stomach" or something like that to ensure she didnt think it was you being rude

BastardBiscuits · 12/09/2020 08:11

It wasn’t a normal belch, it was like when a child tries to make the loudest belch possible, really exaggerated. Nobody burps like that by accident.

OP posts:
WhoAmIWhoAreYou · 12/09/2020 08:12

How can you be sure it wasn't an accident?

liveitwell · 12/09/2020 08:12

What a shit friend, how dare she belch. Haha you're being unfair here. She belched in her own car, maybe she forgot herself.

The SW was a twat, she should be used to background noise enough not to make someone feel awkward, you could have been on a bus for all she knew.

Don't overreact.

HollysBush · 12/09/2020 08:13

How bizarre! Does your friend play practical jokes on people, maybe she thought it was funny and would ease tension or something??

BastardBiscuits · 12/09/2020 08:14

@WhoAmIWhoAreYou

How can you be sure it wasn't an accident?
Because it was so exaggerated ... it’s hard to explain. She kind of went

“Eeeerrrrcccchhhh owww oww owww”

Honestly like a child

Christ. All your OP tells me is how unprofessional the social worker is. Being a social worker exposes people to so very much in surprised a burp had any affect on her at all. Maybe she isn't really social work material?

FishPalace · 12/09/2020 08:17

But why on earth would she belch on purpose? I mean, what would be the point from her pov?

MJMG2015 · 12/09/2020 08:19

Your 'friend' is a rude, selfish, stupid twat.

I would have said, 'sorry about the noise, I'm in a taxi'

I hope you can sort things out for your GD.

BastardBiscuits · 12/09/2020 08:27

@FishPalace

But why on earth would she belch on purpose? I mean, what would be the point from her pov?
They don’t belch on purpose but they do make loud exaggerated noises on purpose

mummmy2017 · 12/09/2020 08:29

Have you thought maybe your friend burped, tried to stop it and distorted it.

SadderThanEeyore · 12/09/2020 08:31

Way too much drama. All you needed to do was say "Pardon you!, sorry about that" and move on.

Mammaaof · 12/09/2020 08:32

Im sorry but i found this way funnier than it is 😂😂😂

Lindtballsrock · 12/09/2020 08:32

You must have a really low opinion of your friend if you think she would purposely exaggerate a belch so your caller would hear it. Does she often do things like that??

FishPalace · 12/09/2020 08:33

But why would someone who is your friend, with whom you’ve just had a nice lunch, and who’s offered you a lift, AND who knows it’s an important phone call about a vulnerable/at risk child, deliberately make a loud and distracting noise in the middle of it?

Thecobwebsarewinning · 12/09/2020 08:33

It was a loud background noise. Unless you were on speaker phone I doubt anyone could indenture it as a belch. Even if she could identify it and even if she thought it was you it won’t have any impact on your GDs future. I’d forget about it if you can.

Your friend sounds revolting.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/09/2020 08:34

Why do you think your friends did it on purpose op?

jessstan2 · 12/09/2020 08:37

Did you ask her if she did it on purpose, her idea of a joke?

Anyway, no harm done.

MistyMinge2 · 12/09/2020 08:38

I reckon your friend just forgot herself for a moment. You can't undo it. Move on and don't fall out over it, it's not worth it.

Pelleas · 12/09/2020 08:39

My sister's DP does this - lets out really loud belches in the background when she's on the phone. It might be forgivable if he was 12 but he's in his 50s. So annoying.
