She did it purpose, surely?

Went for lunch with a friend and she kindly offered me a lift home. In the car I told her I was expecting an important phone call from my granddaughters social worker and was she ok with me taking it in the car. She laughed and said it was fine and that I didn’t need to ask.

Surely enough SW rang and I answered. A few minutes into the conversation friend let out an almighty obnoxious belch. I swear I felt the car rumble. SW literally stopped talking mid sentence and then, after a few seconds of awkward silence she tried to carry on where she left off saying “ummm ... I’ve lost my train of thought, where was I?”

I was mortified. I don’t believe this was an accident so why would she do that? Or am I over thinking it?

I just hope SW didn’t think it was me.

@liveitwell

What a shit friend, how dare she belch. Haha you're being unfair here. She belched in her own car, maybe she forgot herself.

The SW was a twat, she should be used to background noise enough not to make someone feel awkward, you could have been on a bus for all she knew.

Don't overreact.

belching is disgusting! Absolutely rank!!

LovingLola · 12/09/2020 08:42

Was it a confidential phone call?

redcarbluecar · 12/09/2020 08:42

The car rumbled? Blimey. Well, not very pleasant for you, but inconsequential to the social worker, I'd have thought.

daisypond · 12/09/2020 08:42

Was your friend trying to be funny, in the way of seven-year-olds?

ColleagueFromMars · 12/09/2020 08:43

Oh my goodness this is bringing back baadd memories!

As a young adult I once got in the car with my newish boyfriend, shut the doors, and I let out a huge belch Blush He was Shock I was BlushBlushBlush and all I could do was apologise profusely. I'm not a huge belch type of a person, I can only think that my body reflexively did it thinking that having just shut a car door it was "safe" because I must be alone in private but obviously I wasn't alone. I'm still Blush about it to this day 20 years later!

So on the basis of very personal experience I think she really could have done it by accident!

FallonsTeaRoom · 12/09/2020 08:43

Some people have health issues that mean burps are very loud and unexpected. It's not actually something that you can stifle to any extent. It doesn't mean they don't find it embarrassing either.

VintageStitchers · 12/09/2020 08:44

I think you’re wrong OP.

You’d just been for lunch and she was sat hunched up behind the wheel of a car. I think it was genuine.

Its certainly pretty normal in my case. I have the most horrendous wind after eating these days, and it can be noisy whichever end it pops out of.

Obviously when in company, you’d try not to let it out and you’d move away when you feel it coming. Perhaps she’d been holding it in for too long and didn’t realise it would be so loud?

Just forget about it. The SW won’t care.

Those saying nasty things, just wait until you’re the wrong side of 45....you’ll learn! Grin.

From the OP....

SW literally stopped talking mid sentence and then, after a few seconds of awkward silence she tried to carry on where she left off saying “ummm ... I’ve lost my train of thought, where was I?”

Absolutely unprofessional. SW should be able to continue a conversation despite a bit of background noise.

Sarahandco · 12/09/2020 08:46

what did your friend say afterwards?

If it is out of character I would assume that as someone else said - she tried to stifle it and made it a whole lot worse.

oakleaffy · 12/09/2020 08:46

I'm sorry, but I laughed out loud at that.

I'm sure the SW would have known it wasn't you, as the sound of a gargantuan toad wouldn't have been in her actual ear.

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/09/2020 08:48

But why would someone who is your friend, with whom you’ve just had a nice lunch, and who’s offered you a lift, AND who knows it’s an important phone call about a vulnerable/at risk child, deliberately make a loud and distracting noise in the middle of it?

^^This

Unless there is a good reason for thinking she did it on purpose, you have a very low opinion of what sounds like a good friend.
Didn't you ask her why she'd done it? There's no way that one of my friends would belch like that and I wouldn't mention it.

Hahaha88 · 12/09/2020 08:48

Mountain. Mole hill

Usergroundzero · 12/09/2020 08:48

This would have really pissed me off. I don’t get pissed off easy but that was an important phone call with your DGD SW.

It was really disrespectful.

Did you say anything to her afterwards.

Maybe the SW was some wet behind the ears new graduate?...An experienced SW would surely not have turned a hair at a mere belch, and wouldn't have lost her stride for a second.

dayswithaY · 12/09/2020 08:48

I can't believe the social worker hasn't dealt with worse things than a loud belch before. I probably wouldn't have chosen to take this phone call in the car anyway. Forget it, focus on your granddaughter.

ClementineWoolysocks · 12/09/2020 08:49

belching is disgusting! Absolutely rank!!

Seriously? It's a perfectly normal bodily function. Everyone burps.

OP maybe she was in pain or discomfort from something she ate or maybe she's just a giant bellend. No one is going to be able to tell you if she did it on purpose or not.
Don't mention it to the social worker or apologise, there really is no need. I'm sure she's heard/seen/done worse things.

roadsurvey · 12/09/2020 08:50

Well this was indeed my whole point. Not even a new SW would be likely to give a fuck about a burp in the background.

SidVisk · 12/09/2020 08:53

Have you thought maybe your friend burped, tried to stop it and distorted it.

Yes OP. Have you ever thought this? Grin

CaMePlaitPas · 12/09/2020 08:54

This is so funny,, I'm sorry OP.

If this is out of character for her then I would give her a pass, I think you are being unreasonable.

DameHannahRelf · 12/09/2020 08:54

"I'm sure SWs have far worse problems to worry about."

^This. She'll have forgotten already.

MitziK · 12/09/2020 08:55

Wouldn't the social worker be expecting you to be taking her call in privacy?

FallonsTeaRoom · 12/09/2020 08:56

HamRadio · 12/09/2020 08:56

God that’s disgusting. I have no idea whether or not she did it on purpose but I’d be irritated.

I hate belching. There is just no need. I get that sometimes you need to burp but it’s not difficult to keep it quiet.

oakleaffy · 12/09/2020 08:56

Indeed..when one thinks of the really sad and really heart wrenching , traumatising things SW's have to deal with, a mere burp is nothing.

One wonders if she is really cut out for the role if a mere belch shocks her.
