to ask for addictive podcast recommendations?

Podcasts have been around for ages but the concept never really appealed.

Then last week I thought I'd give one a go as a way of making housework less boring and I'm totally hooked! I'm really looking for some more ideas for really good podcasts to listen to. I've only listened to two so far which I can't recommend enough:

  • Serial (season one): A teenager in America goes to jail for killing his ex-girlfriend. That was almost 20 years ago now, and he's still there. A journalist sets out to try and figure out whether he really did it. The journalist is so charismatic and fluid, she's a great storyteller. It was just so engrossing.
  • S-town: In the deep south, a eccentric genius gets in touch with a New York radio station, asking them to come down and investigate a murder that happened in the local town - a place the man lovingly refers to as 'Shit Town'. The story absolutely doesn't pan out the way you'd expect it to...

I found these podcasts so compulsive and addictive. It was just really fascinating storytelling and a glimpse into different worlds.

Can anyone suggest some new podcasts I can become obsessed with in a similar vein?

Fake heiress and the missing crypto queen. Both bbc.

mummy2oneandtwo · 11/09/2020 22:08

In the Dark, season 2 and the case of Curtis Flowers....it's amazing and shows what investigative journalism can do

JaneyGotAGun · 11/09/2020 22:11

I like listening too whilst cleaning or out walking with the baby.

That Chapter & True Crime Junkie are good

evilkitten · 11/09/2020 22:12

Tim Harford's cautionary tales are good.

Oldenoughtobedead · 11/09/2020 22:14

I echo Missing Crypto Queen and Cautionary Tales. I’d add 13 minutes to the Moon to that list.

ThorFull · 11/09/2020 22:14

Really embarrassed to ask- but how do I listen to podcasts?
I like an audiobook on audible, but would prefer something shorter. I use an iPhone.

HappyHoppy · 11/09/2020 22:16

‘My dad wrote a porno‘ is hilarious!

possibletesco · 11/09/2020 22:16

The Vanished
Man in the window
The moth

Shepherdspyreads · 11/09/2020 22:17

Thorfull- There should be a podcast app already installed on your iPhone - just open that & you can search for them & listen. They are free!

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 11/09/2020 22:18

Black Box Down if you like plane crash stuff. It’s very very interesting.

Kobrakid · 11/09/2020 22:20

Scam goddess. It’s about scams both current and historic and I love it. It’s hilarious but I’m learning about a lot of stuff I’ve never heard about before. Also love lockdown parenting.

Small Town Murder
Crime in sports

KurriKawari · 11/09/2020 22:22

OP - what do you think, Adnan Syed, guilty or not guilty?

Piratesue · 11/09/2020 22:24

@KurriKawari def not guilty

nearlyoldenough · 11/09/2020 22:25

Dirty John is good

Liadan · 11/09/2020 22:25

Not the OP but I think Adnan is guilty. He definitely got an unfair trial, so for that I don't think justice is served but I do believe there is enough circumstancial evidence to convince me that he murdered Hae Min Li

Sinisterhood - two women who discuss creepy / sinister / spooky stories (real and legendary) and are just so funny and chatty and delightful.

This Podcast Will Kill You - each episode looks at an illness or condition and goes into the history, biology and symptoms. It is so well researched and interesting, and the two hosts are wonderful.

Slow Burn - can’t recommend this more highly, and particularly if you liked Serial. Each series takes a particular scandal or monumental event and addresses the way it unfolded in real time to give a sense of how it felt to experience it first hand, but viewed with the benefit of hindsight. The first series, about the watergate scandal, is particularly good. There is a spin off series called Fiasco which I also recommend.

Mystery Show - only one season before it was cancelled by the network, but it is a perfect season. Never has a podcast been more thoughtful, whimsical, charming or insightful.

Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness - JVN isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but this podcast has really varied and interesting guests and covers so many topics. It’s very funny and thought-provoking, and JVN is such an accessible and democratic host.

Redhanded
Desert Island Discs
I recently did a ten hour one about Lindy Chamberline
Blood on the tracks (Colin Murray)
Soundtracking with Edith Bowman
Wrongful conviction with Jason Flom
In the dark - Jacob Watterlidge
There's an Australian one called Mamamia with Mia Friedman which is pretty good. Ditto 'Unspeakable ' with Megan Daum.

LajesticVantrashell · 11/09/2020 22:30

I agree re: Adnan being guilty. What reason would Jay have to lie??

ShopTattsyrup · 11/09/2020 22:30

My dad wrote a porno - 3 friends read and discuss the amature writings of the self published porn author Rocky Flintstone
Fake Heiress - BBC true crime about a fake heiress
All Killa no Filla - seriel killers discussed by two comedians ... as the series progresses there is substantially more Filla than Killa

Tandoorimixedgrill · 11/09/2020 22:30

Dolly Partons America
The Dream (about mlms)

Twaddledee · 11/09/2020 22:31

Thorfull it’s the purple icon on your iPhone

MrsJackRackham · 11/09/2020 22:32

The Doorstep Murder, BBC. A bank manager was shot on his doorstep in Nairn, no one has been arrested and the motive is unknown.
Can you give a brief description of the podcast you're recommending please? I'm always looking for new stuff to listen and it helps deciding if I'm interested in it Grin
