to ask for addictive podcast recommendations?

Podcasts have been around for ages but the concept never really appealed.

Then last week I thought I'd give one a go as a way of making housework less boring and I'm totally hooked! I'm really looking for some more ideas for really good podcasts to listen to. I've only listened to two so far which I can't recommend enough:

  • Serial (season one): A teenager in America goes to jail for killing his ex-girlfriend. That was almost 20 years ago now, and he's still there. A journalist sets out to try and figure out whether he really did it. The journalist is so charismatic and fluid, she's a great storyteller. It was just so engrossing.
  • S-town: In the deep south, a eccentric genius gets in touch with a New York radio station, asking them to come down and investigate a murder that happened in the local town - a place the man lovingly refers to as 'Shit Town'. The story absolutely doesn't pan out the way you'd expect it to...

I found these podcasts so compulsive and addictive. It was just really fascinating storytelling and a glimpse into different worlds.

Can anyone suggest some new podcasts I can become obsessed with in a similar vein?

For history podcasts I'd recommend The History of Rome podcast - the first view episodes are a bit ropey as he is right at the start of podcasting and takes a while to get in his stride, and some of the pronunciation is a bit weird. However it's now one of the top 50 history podcasts for good reason.

After he finishes The History of Rome with a zillion episodes, he does Revolutions which is brilliant - English Civil War, American Civil War, Haitian Revolution, French Revolution, Mexico, 1848 and loads more.

I thought I knew a lot of history but clearly I did not!

For something a bit different I really like Dressed: A History of Fashion. OK, so there is a lot about lovely clothes but there is also loads about women's lives, society, the French Revolution, all sorts of unexpected things.

My favourite is 'You're Wrong About', which takes in-depth looks at events you think you know about.

Mostly single episodes, but they have multi-episodes on certain subjects. There series of OJ Simpson episodes are the most in-depth examination I've come across, as they go into the backgrounds of all the main people involved as well as the full story.

I love the relationship the two presenters have, there's a series of episodes they did on a book called 'Michelle Remembers' that really shows this - whilst never going off-topic.

"Manhunt - finding Kevin Parle' is a series about the main investigator on 'Hunted' on TV, looking for a real-life criminal. Very interesting.

'Mortem' is a series of two- or three-part fictionalised cases that are used to discuss real post-mortem investigatory techniques - I found it fascinating, and not obviously fictional, which was what I didn't like about the Fake Heiress podcast.

'The Missing Cryptoqueen' was/is brilliant, I agree with everyone else.

Shagged. Married. Annoyed by Chris and Rosie Ramsey, hilarious

tobee · 12/09/2020 17:56

@Veterinari Thanks!

@alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 is it not British made?

Roominmyhouse · 12/09/2020 23:10

Dr Death
Culpable
Bear Brook
Hunting warhead
The shrink next door
The immaculate deception

These are all one case type series rather than bring about different things each episode.

But my favourites in general are -
RedHanded
Morbid
Crime Junkie
All Killa no Filla
Katherine Ryan telling Everybody Everything
Adam Buxton
Louis Theroux grounded
Sara Pascoe Sex, power, money

Summer776 · 13/09/2020 03:56

For light relief you could start on episode 1 and try Shagged Married Annoyed. I listened to them whilst in lockdown and was often crying with laughter/shock at some of the things! Chris and Rosie Ramsey. New episode every Friday.

HollaHolla · 13/09/2020 05:00

Evil Genius on the bbc. Russell Kane (who I usually can’t be bothered with) gets a panel to discuss whether historical figures were evil or a genius.
For sheer ridiculousness - No Holes Barred. Two Instagram mums talk all things rude and female.

anotherBadAvatar · 13/09/2020 19:53

Ooh, and not so much a podcast, almost more a radio play is blackout. Don’t think it’s been mentioned yet.

Features Remi Malik, and its about a mysterious event that causes a local (nationwide??) Blackout. Post-apocalyptic in nature and really interesting

Veterinari · 13/09/2020 20:35

Another great history/general interest podcast is 'Fierce' a history of incredible women that traditional history (written by men) has overlooked.
Fascinating

MitziK · 13/09/2020 20:38

Unobscured. History of the Salem Witch trials in the first series.

Livingthecovidaloca · 13/09/2020 20:41

Season 2 of Serial is very good too...
Who the hell is Hamish? About a serial con artist in Australia is excellent.
Fake Heiress.
Ones I listen to every week are Shagged, Married, Annoyed, and Pod Save America.

LeSquigh · 13/09/2020 20:50

Placemarking, I will come back to this when I have finally got round to Joan and Jericha. Julia Davis is my hero!

powershowerforanhour · 13/09/2020 20:51

Another vote for Dolly Parton's America.

spottedbadger · 13/09/2020 21:52

The Harrowing. Described as ‘’supernatural horror’, I’m not that much into supernatural, or horrors but I was hooked!!! So good.

Another vote for Dirty John, much better than the tv series.

Dirty Diana - Demi Moore as Diana who runs a secret erotic website. Didn’t expect much but it’s actually quite good.

Detective Trapp - LA Times true crime podcast about a female detective investigating a serial killer. Very candid, she is an amazing woman!

Isesgirl · 13/09/2020 22:27

Stuff You Should Know - two guys with the most soothing voices and a decades long friendship (which really comes across) discuss anything from Scientology to how worms work (yes, worms, not a typo), from the origin of words to missing person cases, it's different every time.

There are short episodes of ten to fifteen minutes or ones that are 45 mins to an hour. I am obsessed. I love their voices, the fun they have, the way they often go off on a tangent, I love everything about them.

They've been going a LONG time so there are hundreds if not a few thousand episodes to listen to.

anxietrist · 13/09/2020 22:30

I've never listened to a podcast, might give it a go after reading this!

Following!

VanGoghsDog · 14/09/2020 10:42

The Last Days Of August - about the sad death of a porn star, and her life.

And The Butterfly Effect - about how online porn started.

You need to be pretty open minded to listen to them but I found them fascibt, and I have also lived ones you have mentioned, like S Town, Crypto Queen, Fake Heiress.

Also on BBC Sounds, Paul Sinha General Knowledge. One full series and second series is halfway through. Loving this.

gogojojo · 14/09/2020 10:46

Shreds
All Killa No Filla
Redhanded
Once upon a Crime
The Clearing
Cold
Shagged Married Annoyed

neverenoughchelseaboots · 14/09/2020 10:47

The Dropout and Missing Crypto Queen. I like the true crime feel without it involving anyone getting murdered!

Livingthecovidaloca · 20/09/2020 19:29

Currently listening to The Immaculate Deception about a fertility doctor who used his own sperm to inseminate his patients.

ThorFull · 21/09/2020 20:18

Oh wow- I’ve found the podcasts app and certainly am addicted!
Started with my dad wrote a porno. I Can’t think of anything that has ever made me laugh so much. I’m having a little break from that and devoured 2 seasons of serial. (Adnan totally is guilty).
I can honestly say my house has never been cleaner- I’m genuinely looking forward to putting my headphones in tomorrow and doing more housework. Also enjoying being stuck in traffic on my commute. Even the errand through Birmingham road works during Fridays rush hour was fun, listening to podcasts.
Starting S Town tomorrow.
So glad I found this thread.

How do I listen to podcasts? I have an android phone. And a laptop. I'm so far behind the times. Grin
