to ask for addictive podcast recommendations?

Podcasts have been around for ages but the concept never really appealed.

Then last week I thought I'd give one a go as a way of making housework less boring and I'm totally hooked! I'm really looking for some more ideas for really good podcasts to listen to. I've only listened to two so far which I can't recommend enough:

  • Serial (season one): A teenager in America goes to jail for killing his ex-girlfriend. That was almost 20 years ago now, and he's still there. A journalist sets out to try and figure out whether he really did it. The journalist is so charismatic and fluid, she's a great storyteller. It was just so engrossing.
  • S-town: In the deep south, a eccentric genius gets in touch with a New York radio station, asking them to come down and investigate a murder that happened in the local town - a place the man lovingly refers to as 'Shit Town'. The story absolutely doesn't pan out the way you'd expect it to...

I found these podcasts so compulsive and addictive. It was just really fascinating storytelling and a glimpse into different worlds.

Can anyone suggest some new podcasts I can become obsessed with in a similar vein?

@Thatbliddywoman I've downloaded the Stitcher app onto my android phone. Then I connect using my bluetooth wireless headphones and gets me through my gym session!

Thatbliddywoman · 21/09/2020 21:18

I've just seen that app when I was looking up podcasts :) fab. Thank you

Behind the Bastards (baddies from history are discussed, looking at their childhoods and political circumstances that led to the person becoming a great big ol' bastard).

Roominmyhouse · 21/09/2020 22:22

Started ‘this podcast will kill you’ based on this thread, so interesting!

Covert20 · 21/09/2020 22:29

I saw this thread and thought “oh goodie! More podcasts to feed my habit!” But I’ve listened to almost all of these...😳 combine driving a lot for work pre lockdown and hours walking around the block pushing a pram in lockdown...

I can only echo what other people have said - if you listened to Serial and concluded Adnan was guilty, listen to Undisclosed. He may be guilty, but if he is, it is purely coincidental to his conviction- Jay has absolutely no idea what happened...

And I really recommend the Curtis Flowers series of In the Dark - they actually achieved something with their journalism, really professional stuff.

I’ve not seen people mention Cold or Accused- I’ve actually corresponded with the team on Accused 🙈🤣

Oh bloody hell. I’m gonna have to listen to undisclosed now.
Really fancy a workout though and not sure if I can combine the two...

Autumnchill · 29/09/2020 07:32

Just binge listened to Chasing Charlie about a con man. Excellent listen! Would recommend

ThorFull · 14/10/2020 20:39

Keep coming back to this thread for my next podcast. Struggling at tbe moment, to find something gripping. I find the bbc sounds app is more reliable than Podcast app, for auto playing next episode.

Have listened to Believed. That was excellent.
Gave up on Chasing Charlie, and the one about Curtis Flowers.
Bad peopled is ok, but not gripping. Need more!

If you just search for Wonderly in your podcast app, you’ll find a lot of good ones. Dr Death and Dirty John were already mentioned, but I also really enjoyed The Shrink Next Door, about an abusive, manipulative therapist. It’s pretty astonishing.

This American Life has a different theme each week. It’s a radio programme that’s been on for years. They have an app that suggests some of the best episodes to start with if you’re struggling to know where to start.

I like The High Low, a discussion of pop culture and the arts with Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes. I also religiously listen to The Daily, the NY Times podcast about current events.

I’m originally from America, so for the moment, I mostly listen to American political podcasts to stoke my rage.

Foldinthecheese · 14/10/2020 20:59

Oh, also The Dropout, about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, which was a big scam, and How Did We Get Here, which is Claudia Winkleman hosting while people have a session with a therapist. It’s so interesting and thoughtful.

Behind the Bastards (baddies from history are discussed, looking at their childhoods and political circumstances that led to the person becoming a great big ol' bastard).
I love that one as well! Though some bastards make me apoplectic with rage!

Chasing Cosby is fascinating and frustrating with how awful all is but about Bill Cosby and the journalist who broke story of abuse

MsEllany · 14/10/2020 21:44

Following this as I love podcasts and can always do with some more recommendations!

One that hasn’t been mentioned yet is The Dollop - two American comedians (one of them is friends with Karen from My Favourite Murder) discuss a topic from American history, or sometimes something topical. The main host is very disillusioned with America at the moment so he gets very political on some of the later ones.

The Skeptics Guide to the Universe is very good also.

S town was brilliant I kept thinking about what would happen next until i switched it back on fascinating

Autumnchill · 15/10/2020 21:27

Has anyone listened to This Sounds Serious?

It's a spoof true crime but it's done that well I completely forgot half way through and started believing it 😂

The first season is about twins and ones a local weatherman who gets murdered and his brother is slightly eccentric who wanted to be in a boy band and they play some of his songs and I was sat there thinking 'how the hell did they think they'd get a record deal!'

Genius! Off on road trip next week and going to listen again so my husband can hear it.

emsmum79 · 15/10/2020 22:08

Best way to listen to podcasts with no iphone?
I have a kindle fire.
These sound brilliant!

OhioOhioOhio · 15/10/2020 23:31

I love Desert Island Discs.

orchidsonabudget · 16/10/2020 09:20

I don't have as much time to listen to podcasts as I should! I don't know how to make more. I had an audible subscription and have just downloaded about a weeks worth of fiction too.

paperclippink · 16/10/2020 09:52

I'm taking some suggestions from here as I've not listened to many podcasts.

Of those I have, Dear Joan and Jericha is hilarious (if you like the actresses, you'll know what you are in for) and The Boring Talks have some good episodes - although not all speakers were born to it.
