To ask if there's something I'm missing about the allegedly "controversial" Diversity performance

Diversity performed on Britain's Got Talent, a performance which incorporated a message about BLM. Their performance, as usual, was incredible and sent out some great messages. The video is below.

It's had 10,000 complaints. Why?! am I missing something? Did someone's nipple pop out or something? What is the basis of people's complaints? The only reason I can think is that some people (probably because they're part of the problem) don't like it when others point out that there's racism in the world? Boo hoo to them

I just watched it but 2 things I thought probably bothered people was the fact that the voice over says "black lives matter" (and yes they do) but a lot of people are anti racist and campaign, protest and educate against racism but still don't agree with the BLM movement. Maybe people thought Diversity were promoting a link with that political organisation instead of using a slogan and objected on those grounds.

Also the heavy emphasis on police brutality, which many people in the UK would think "that doesn't happen here" and basically vilifying the police when it's extremely unfair to compare the US and UK police forces. That could also alienate people

'Also the heavy emphasis on police brutality, which many people in the UK would think "that doesn't happen here" and basically vilifying the police when it's extremely unfair to compare the US and UK police forces. That could also alienate people'

Exactly.

'Black Lives Matter is now a political movement '

Maybe Diversity are like Starmer and only support the saying not the 'defund the police, anti capitalist, make white people slaves' organisation . 2 entirely different things apparently.

SerenityNowwwww · 11/09/2020 15:50

It was Americanised - the UK isn't America, the world isn't America.

Macncheeseballs · 11/09/2020 16:07

It's about time xfactor had a purpose!

Macncheeseballs · 11/09/2020 16:07

BGT even!

hadenoughbleach · 11/09/2020 16:11

Oooh I just watched the performance.

The routine is a fantastic artistic expression, and it's a great piece of social commentary through dance.

I loved it.

RedRumTheHorse · 11/09/2020 16:22

@Yaottie

Police brutality doesn't happen here?

You must be asleep. How about this for starters - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-53443641

Though I can go around the country and find more from the last couple of years.

Yes please do - one example is not proof of widespread police brutality.

mum2b2017 · 11/09/2020 16:51

@june2007

It,s about the usa not uk, it wasn,t right for a light hearted family show. It,s also about something that happened in a different country with a different culture and different laws.
ill remember that the next time im reminded about the Holocaust or 9/11
1moreRep · 11/09/2020 17:12

I loved it, great story telling and I think they actually used real riot shields which are really heavy (having had to carry them an get kicked and punched through them)

Suze1621 · 11/09/2020 17:37

I think Diversity's performance was fabulous - it was emotive, thought provoking and really well done. I am astonished by the number of complaints and think this demonstrates how much attitudes still need to change.

stoptheworldiwant2getoff · 11/09/2020 17:47

Weird thing is it wasn't just about that. It was a sum up of all the weird shit that's happened this year so I don't reckon it's as bad as everyone is saying.

Gilead · 11/09/2020 17:55

If you thought it too political, or was only about what is happening in the US, you need to educate yourselves.

The U.K. is not a racist country, those who feel they are not equal and claim to have suffered exclusion or hatred just because they are black need to remember anyone can be bullied or discriminated against for lots of reasons not just the colour of their skin
The fact that you claim not to be racist is laughable. It also clearly demonstrates, along with the rest of your post that you are a complete fantasist.

ShebaShimmyShake · 11/09/2020 18:45

Many mixed race married, well integrated, successful black people have felt embarrassed to say they have never been discriminated against and now feel pressured on social media to say otherwise.

I'm not sure why this paragraph leapt out at me among all the other bollocks, but for some reason it did.

Because she/he is suggesting that those of us who suffer racism are to blame for the racism they suffer.
Gilead · 11/09/2020 18:53

@ShebaShimmyShake, it’s the utter bollocks that jumped out at you!

Gilead · 11/09/2020 18:56

It’s also interesting that this is a first post. I suspect they’re trying to derail.

WildAboutMyPlanet · 11/09/2020 19:09

It’s not about the US at all? If you listen to the words, it’s about the Covid and the world going into lockdown, and then during that the issue of racism and BLM coming up due to that event and what that led to.It went on to mention clapping for the NHS.
The death of George Floyd affected us here in the U.K. and has made huge waves and will continue to do so. It wasn’t about just US politics, it was about a situation that affects us all - racism.

I don’t watch BGT but I sought out the performance and I thought it was good. I don’t get why all the complaints and I wonder what the outcome of all those complaints will be? It’s a shame that Cowell hasn’t spoken up in support, I was reading Some racists commenting today saying that his silence is his support that the performance was wrong. He and ITV should stand by the whole thing. If it gets people talking then it’s a good thing. We cannot let the issues of race disappear again, we need to keep focusing on them and highlighting them to ensure we keep working hard to make changes.

ShebaShimmyShake · 11/09/2020 19:18

@SimonJT and @Gilead, yes, maybe. I guess it was the tone of "I am speaking for black people, ones who are married to white people and "well integrated" so you know they like us and are worth listening to, and who are successful so you know they've never experienced racism. And I'm telling you what this very specific demographic thinks, so stop listening to any other black people and definitely don't listen to the black people in Diversity, just listen to these other black people for whom I'm speaking and conveniently think I'm right."

I guess that's why it leapt out at me from the rest of the pile of arse. It was just a really egregious bit of arse.

ShebaShimmyShake · 11/09/2020 19:19

To be clear, I'm calling the comment a pile of arse, not any person.

SisterAgatha · 11/09/2020 19:23

I cried at the end, it was so moving.

LifeIsBusy · 11/09/2020 19:34

I love how people have somehow missed that the performance summed up 2020 and covered more than BLM.

Lookatthat · 11/09/2020 19:35

That’s the first time I’ve watched it, and I found it incredibly moving. Diversity have always used their platform and routines to express more than just ‘dance’ and I think this was the right platform for them to use.
