Posting in AIBU for traffic really!

Did counselling/therapy help you re programme the way you think/feel? How long did it take?!

I suffer from retroactive jealousy (about partners previous partners) and insecurity within relationships. I want to try stop obsessing and thinking these unhealthy thoughts and questioning my partner before I drive him away!

Want to hopefully hear of positive stories really!

Yes...but the caveat for me is that you really need to luck out and “click” with the counsellor or therapist. If you don’t then it is a waste of time and money. And you have to be prepared to do a lot of work yourself. It’s not easy. And it’s not guaranteed. And it’s expensive (if private). But it can work.

To be honest it didn't really work for me. They didn't say anything I hadn't already thought about, or put anything in a new way. I mean how could they, I've thought about my issues every day for months/years/decades, there is nothing about them I haven't considered.

But it seems to be helpful for a lot of people so I don't want to put you off, you should definitely try it.

Yes, but it isn't a short-term deal.

It's worked and not worked for me, as I've had depression and other mh issues for 30 years, all my adult life.
You do have to be prepared to look at the bigger picture. The root of your problem will have nothing to do with jealousy about your dh previous problems.
I've been for a session this morning, my first with this counsellor.
Already I can I will get some benefit from this, whether it will identify and address it all, I don't know yet.
