Relative took I’ll ,in hospital, moved to rest home.
House empty for 3 months ,no calls made
House now sold
Phone Bt to explain and ask them to cut of power to phone so new owners can’t use it .
BT refuse .only recently got all the bills from relatives house ,BT had reffered to dept collection company ,for non payment of line rental ,no phone calls made since January.
I explained situation, relative Took ill ,Now in rest home ,new owners moved in house already .
I explained i am nowhere near house ,as it’s been difficult to sort out out
BT have refused to switch of phone line ,and told me my Iii relative is responsible for any calls they might make from the house for the next month .
Not only that they refused to let me speak to a manager ,and only did after about 10 times of me asking .
I explained the relative took Ill suddenly, and everything was just left to be sorted out from money ,to empty house ,to even fridge and freezer and washing machine ,needed emptied
It’s been a nightmare on top of my family to manage
BT will not budge
BT are saying no to cutting of the phone line ,and that if the new owners make any calls we are liable.
Don’t need this on top of everything else

Bills all paid , relative does not owe them money now ,I’ve paid it ,and paid all the extra charges they put on .
Which after I explained the situation I thought they might of removed
Bearing in mind this is a very old gentleman

If the account is in his name unless you have legal access they won't do something just in your say so- yes he may be ill but their system would run on facts so unless you are on the account then i am not surprised they won't action it

So sorry if you said you are on the account so if so ignore this

bonjonbovi · 10/09/2020 08:20

I’m guessing they have said they need 30 days notice to end a contract, which you’ve only just given? (Yet have managed to sell the house, so should have known to cancel utilities etc during the sale)

Not sure that they are the useless ones here just because they are holding someone to the terms of the contract?

Love2cycle · 10/09/2020 08:20

Once the new owners set up their phone/BB line they should cancel your relatives line.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/09/2020 08:21

Surely it comes under “moving home” they have to end the contract.

For what it’s worth BT are scum and only survive from the older generation thinking they are the most reliable option- much why British Gas gets away with their charges and behaviour. Just happy to know that the younger generations are savvier, I don’t have a landline or use the any of the big names for my gas/ electric

WitsEnding · 10/09/2020 08:23

Ask them to put him on the priority services register and keep notes on all your conversations until you have sorted out power of attorney.
Or
If your relative is able to participate in conversations get them to phone from the rest home
Or
Ask for the account to be put in your name

Any of these would help get through their system

Pringlemonster · 10/09/2020 08:27

If they look at the account they can see no calls have made since January.
They can see I have paid all the extra charges .
Relative is not able to speak on the phone to authorise this ,very poorly.
I know it’s in the contract
I know I should of phoned them earlier, I didn’t as don’t use BT ,but I know that now for the future having phoned them.
I just thought they might of been understanding
My mistake ,silly me

I’ve got power of attorney
They still won’t budge

Have you tried contacting them on Twitter? Often it's on social media and other people can see, they're more likely to sort it

I would not know where to start with Twitter
But my savvy daughter would
Thanks will try that

I’m confused are you saying you shouldn’t pay the line rental?

poshme · 10/09/2020 08:40

Contact you MP and ask them to contact BT

Pringlemonster · 10/09/2020 08:43

I’ve paid everything
I just want them to shut down the line ,so new owners can not make calls on relatives account
BT are saying no
bT say if new owners make calls on relatives account ,we have to pay For the calls

Apparently it is to stop scammers shutting down people’s phone lines

It’s only when something happens that you learn which companies are understanding fair and flexible, and which are not

I have dealt with BT in a business capacity. Before Covid 19 I said that BT were the biggest obstacle to business in the UK, and unless something changes, once Covid 19 is no longer an issue, they will be again.

Analogue customer service in a digital world.

bonjonbovi · 10/09/2020 08:54

Ok - take a look at BT’s Network Controlled Calling (NCC). Add just your number to the list. This should stop a bill.

Funny how BT do what suits them. When I was moving house, BT changed my service two weeks before I'd moved out, at the buyers request, before completion and without consulting me.

BT are appalling, abusive and should be broken up without delay. You have my sympathy.Flowers

Pringlemonster · 10/09/2020 09:11

I’ve dealt with quite a few companies during ,trying to sort out everything for this relative, and yes BT are by far the worst
What was also shocking was the traffif some companies had my relative on ,
My relatives water bill was higher than my family of 6 per month
He lived alone .
With no one to help elderly people get a good deal on bills it was sky high in many utilities
