WIBU to ask this tiler for a receipt?

I'll keep this short. Details changed as outing.

Getting a space in my house tiled and I paid my builder X amount for the tiles I chose, and he said one pack of these tiles should be enough to cover the space required. When he picks up the pack he realises theyre smaller than the size of a standard pack and therefore he needs to buy another 0.5 pack to cover the area I need, and as the tiles are expensive this means a significant increase in cost. He just bought the tiles rather than giving me the opportunity to choose another style which would have come in a larger pack and would have reduced the price.

Am I entitled to ask to see a receipt to ensure he isn't arbitrarily hiking the price up and to make sure there definitely was a purchase of an extra 0.5 set of tiles? FYI he has been quite shifty and has now asked for more money before the job has been completed which I've never had from any other tradesman.

Surely the tile cost would be twice as much, given he can't buy half a pack?

Mamamia456 · 09/09/2020 13:52

So does he now want more money to do the job than he originally quoted? Ask him why that is? As regards the tiles, surely you will be able to see that he has 2 packs instead of one.

He said he would only need an extra 0.5 pack and his supplier would sell him it in this quantity. All the materials have been unpacked and laid out so i can't see physical packs.

How much extra money are we talking here, how many tiles are in one pack?

MrsKahlo · 09/09/2020 15:01

So the single pack of tiles would be £500 and he got an extra half pack.for 250

Too right I'd be asking to see a receipt for that kind of money, but perhaps that's just me?

MrsKahlo · 09/09/2020 16:23

Thank you! I googled it and it said its the height of rudeness, but im looking at the space and im thinking... i wanna see the receipts

Can't you just look up the model of tiles online and see what pack size they come in/roughly how much they cost wholesale?

mrsbyers · 09/09/2020 18:14

Just count the tiles ?

ivfbeenbusy · 09/09/2020 18:39

£500 for a box of tiles?! I'd expect them to lay themselves at that price

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 10/09/2020 05:12

Definitely... Receipts all the way.... Especially in light of the shiftines and wanting to increase the bill!!

Also presumably his day rate is /should be the same whether he's laying 99p tiles or ones carved by angels??

Surely it's his fault if he's quoted too low....?
You shouldn't have to make up for his inaccuracy?
