Festival of Brexit - you couldn’t make it up

Aibu to think that government plans to devote £120 million to a Festival of Great Britain and Northern Ireland scheduled for 2022 to celebrate Brexit by ‘bringing us all together’ are so profoundly out of step with the public mood that they look more like a bad taste April Fools Day spoof?

Sadly they are all too real. Applications opened today.

Thanks for the heads up

Eve · 09/09/2020 12:49

will they hand out food and medicines ?

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 09/09/2020 12:53

No I actually don’t think it’s out of step with the mood of people who still very strongly oppose us leaving the EU (So many on MN)

Many do not hence we we are where we are

And many simply don’t care that much and just want it over and done with (I think this is the majority now)

The festival will be celebrated by a few and strongly opposed by a few most won’t really care

nosswith · 09/09/2020 12:54

The best celebration would be to see the main architect face justice for all the deaths his inaction has caused during the pandemic. I'd be happy to celebrate Mr Johnson going to prison.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/09/2020 12:55

Well l care. What a waste of public money. I’m paying for this shit

Figmentofmyimagination · 09/09/2020 13:01

alwayssunny so is it a good use of £120 million when at least 300,000 redundancies have been announced in the last 2 months alone?

If we have to do this, it should be as quiet and low key as possible.

They should leave it to the history books to write the narrative of these years, not try to build a false national story. It’s all about myth-making. Disgraceful.

No I never said that at all

I think those who supported Brexit will love it those who don’t regardless how much money will oppose it

I don’t think many will care that much. Considering the hundreds of millions that the government is spending at present

Do I think money can be better spent yes. Do I care that a festival shall be put on no

Blue565 · 09/09/2020 13:08

They need a big festival to gather everyone together to give out food, water and provide shelter after our economy collapses

the above is tongue in cheek

probably

pointythings · 09/09/2020 13:13

I object to my taxes paying for this. However, if it ends up being like a food bank only one that hands out cake to hungry people, I might be OK with it.

There'll be fuck all to celebrate by 2022.

Manolin · 09/09/2020 13:20

It won't happen. There will be a u-turn.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/09/2020 14:42

The country is skint due to Corona and let’s fork out for a shit festival for a shot and potentially calamitous event😒

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/09/2020 14:42

Shit not shot

Thedogscollar · 09/09/2020 15:00

Another load of bollocks thought up by Bojo and Dom. Quicker they are out the better. Couldn't run a bloody bath.

Crankley · 09/09/2020 16:02

Sounds good, I look forward to it.

LonelyFromCorona · 09/09/2020 16:20

The gammons and their wives will be covered in Union Jack themed clothing, waving flags and singing rule Britannia.

For quite a significant section of the population, it will be very popular.
