For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?

I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

Zerrin13 · 06/09/2020 15:42

I got my beautiful little dog 7 months ago and I cant wait to spoil her at Christmas and on her birthday

rwalker · 06/09/2020 15:43

My mum cousins is like this TBH humour her and eye roll but she does expect us to sort of join in .

One of my best friends does sometime treat her dog like a child and she jokes telling me to rein her in and reminder her it a dog not a person . We normally have a laugh about it .

Whilst can't ever see myself doing it if it makes her happy why not

Artykitty666 · 06/09/2020 15:44

Saved up and bought my hamster a new wheel when i was 12, too. Pretty sure i wasn't after a baby replacement. Altho granted it wasn't on his birthday because, well, they only get about two in their lives so it's risky to wait....

MWNA · 06/09/2020 15:45

I think it's a weird thing to do.
My sister does it for her dog. I'm very intolerant of that sort of nonsense.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/09/2020 15:45

Well ok but you’re uninvited to my Greyhound’s 13th birthday next week. Oh yeah, and she says you’re unfriended on Facebook too. So there.

Galaxycat · 06/09/2020 15:46

@FlamingoAndJohn

My mother, who is devoid of grandchildren, sends my cat £10 in her birthday card....
@FlamingoAndJohn

I adore this!! My parents buy my cats a Christmas present ❤️😂

LondonJax · 06/09/2020 15:46

The point is, she doesn't think it's pointless.

I'm pretty sure you do plenty of things that others would consider pointless ... let's think....oh yes, like checking in on your neighbours Facebook page, working out if she can afford a gift for her pet, and taking time out of your day to make a pointless post about it.

Your neighbour sounds lovely. You sound like a nosey parker.

Our dog not only has a birthday present on his birthday, but also on the anniversary of when he came to live with us. He gets a Christmas present and my dad sends him gifts throughout the year.

He's not good at signing cards because his humans forget to buy them, but he does text his aunty and uncle with tales of woe....

dicksplash · 06/09/2020 15:49

We celebrate our cats birthday and he gets Christmas presents. I don't see it as weird and I can't see how it affects or bothers you op.

SnowBrussels · 06/09/2020 15:50

What harm is she doing?

SusanneLinder · 06/09/2020 15:52

My 3 dogs get birthday cakes and presents. And a stocking at Christmas. It's my money and I shall spend it on what I want. Nobody's business.

KarmaStar · 06/09/2020 15:52

Of course yabu, you know it!that's why the vote wasn't clicked on.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/09/2020 15:52

My cat always gets birthday and and Christmas presents, I spent more on him than on DH one year Blush

DM used to tell people she had a grandson called Harry and just didn't mention he was furry and had a tail. This was only because some judgmental cow told her I was selfish for not 'giving her' grandchildren!

123feraverto · 06/09/2020 15:52

My cat has presents for her birthday and Christmas

She gets a cat food cake with candles

Because it's fun

And she's my cat

MagentaRocks · 06/09/2020 15:56

I am already planning what to get for our dog for his first Christmas, advent calendars, dog mince pies, stocking etc. It is fun and gives me pleasure. He is very well looked after and it is just a way of giving him some treats.

He also got my nephew a birthday card and gift, although I had to write the card for him 🤣

DustyMaiden · 06/09/2020 15:57

I have to buy Christmas stockings for my DGD’s dogs, there are three of them. No harm in it.

tillyandmilly · 06/09/2020 15:58

It’s not unusual at all - feel sorry for your pets!

Chloemol · 06/09/2020 16:00

What’s it got to do with you? Each to their own

Florin · 06/09/2020 16:00

If you think it’s odd you can’t have given a dog a wrapped present before. The joy on their little faces when they are given a present and the fun they have ripping off the paper and the happiness they get proudly showing off their new toy to anyone they can with their faces lit up and wiggly little bottoms is just so lovely. Mine get birthday presents and a homemade dog friendly cake. At Christmas they have beautiful personalised stockings hanging by the fire which Father Christmas fills with a new toy and treats and they get their own Christmas dinner. They even help chew the carrot that has been left out for the reindeers to make it look realistic!

bringbacksideburns · 06/09/2020 16:00

I feel like the worse Cat owner in the world now because I have a rough idea they were born September/ October 2012 but havent a clue what day Confused. I give them a few special treats at Christmas. I have tried to dress them in novelty hats and bow ties but they hated it.

My friend's daughter on the other hand treats her dogs like Princes, lots of gifts and balloons - she has even had a photo shoot with them but each to their own Grin

MrsToothyBitch · 06/09/2020 16:01

Our cat gives and receives Christmas gifts. She gets a dreamies box and we use her "gifts" to us to give each other little extra gifts and surprise each other.

Let your neighbour do her thing. If it makes her happy and it's not impacting anyone what's the harm and how is it your business? I'm sure you do things she thinks are weird or pointless, too.

Polkadotties · 06/09/2020 16:02

My Dsis is getting a puppy. I can’t wait to buy the noisiest squeakiest toy for its Xmas present Grin

SerenDippitty · 06/09/2020 16:02

I buy Christmas presents for my dog nephew as well as my human one. Human gets birthday presents too.
