And with Matthew I think they felt lady Mary couldn't be happy and nice that she needed her cold side to stay prominent for the series.

I'm a recent binge watcher of the show and I too was horrified. I just felt like they did it so Mary could carry on being mean. To Edith. They made her quite silly I felt.
