Just in case, spoiler alert!

Sirius Black.

OP posts:

Chay in Debutante (Anne Melville).

Bastiaan in The Heart's Invisible Furies.

Cinna and Mags in Mockingjay. Finnick in Catching Fire.

Cristobal in The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman. A lot of Louis de Bernières' books have at least one heartwrenching death, but this on really stuck with me for some reason.

@EyeDrops

Matthew Crawley

Amber in House - when Wilson came home and saw her note on the bed saying she'd gone to pick up House. Full on sobbing.

Barbara in Call the Midwife

Tony in Soldier Soldier - it was just so sudden and shocking 😢

And one that's haunted me - years ago in The Bill, there was a serial killer. I can't even remember the pc's name - Cassie or something? - but it turned out to be either her boyfriend or ex... Anyway, the plot had been building for so long, but I've never forgotten the shot of her, chained up and blindfolded, sobbing as she realised what was happening. It really traumatised me!

Was that the character that recited the Lords Prayer as she realised? That has stayed with me my whole life and I barely watched the show!

Ditto all good HP/GOT characters.

Watched Downton when my mat leave started. DH and I clung to DD sobbing when Sybil died. The info blurb ruined Matthew's death so I knew it was coming, still devastating.

The one that really got me on Downton was Isis the dog, when Lord G carried her into bed with them so she wouldn't be scared... tearing up just typing that Sad

Judith Kerr's Mog ...... I can't even look at that book (Goodbye Mog) without a lump in my throat.

Thankfully, it must have been a dream mustn't it, because Mog came back for the Sainsburys Christmas ad didn't she?!

Bluetrews25 · 06/09/2020 16:17

Tom Robinson in Mockingbird
Never stood a chance.

Anyd many that PPs have already mentioned.

toomanyspiderplants · 06/09/2020 16:18

Paolo Sandrini. titanic mini series on it by Julian the fellows

Mrsfrumble · 06/09/2020 16:18

When Lisa Faulkner got deep fat fried in Spooks!

Yes! I wasn’t emotionally attached to the character or anything, but it was so shocking and gruesome I remember thinking “bloody hell, that’s a bit much!”

Robbie and Cecelia in Atonement. I hadn’t read the book so when the twist happened in the film I was blindsided.

AWellReadWoman · 06/09/2020 16:19

Dr Greene, ER
Henry, The Time Traveller's Wife
Em, One Day
Hodor
Quinn and Brodie, Homeland

aprilshowers2015 · 06/09/2020 16:20

@WeirdAndPissedOff

A lot of the ones I would have visited, and some I hasnt thought of are already above. Sad

Several GOT ones - Shireen, Oberyn and the Tyrells in particular. And I struggled to read the scene with Lady - Ned describing her looking up at him was too much!

Newt, Hicks and Bishop. It felt like such a kick in the teeth after the ending of the previous film.

Agree re: Newt, Hicks and Bishop. Also in the extended version of Aliens you find out Ripley's (58 year old) daughter has died, that was so so sad.
Graymare · 06/09/2020 16:20

Charlie from Rose in Bloom, Louisa May Alcott's sequel to Eight Cousins.

Claire Mcleod, Mcleod's Daughters. Was going through a passionate 'everything Aussie is great' phase at the time and lived that series!

@purpledagger

Many Games of Thrones, for different reasons:

Good characters who didn't 'deserve' it;
Ned Stark
Tommen and Myrcella Baratheon

Characters I just loved on screen
Khal Drogo
Tywin Lannister
Lord Varys
Olenna Tyrell
Margery Tyrell
Oberyn Martell

Ones that pulled on the heart strings:
Shireen Baratheon (being sacrificed by her Father unnecessarily)
Elia Martell (having her children murdered in front of her and being raped and killed by The Mointain)

But Ned Stark’s death on the re-read is the beautiful Greek tragedy. You know what’s coming so you can really savour the ‘OMG nooooo DON’T have that conversation with Cersei you noble plonker’.
LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 06/09/2020 16:23

@HumphreyCobblers yes!!! It was the quickness of it as well. Especially after all these years killed off like that and not much reaction. Guess no time...

And Arthur in Merlin..or not so much his death but the whole thing it led to. Poor old Merlin wandering through the years alone waiting

TheFallenMadonna · 06/09/2020 16:23

Oh, and DCI Bilborough in Cracker.

ohffs66 · 06/09/2020 16:24

Lee Scoresby and Hester, I can't even think about it.

If you're watching The Tunnel, be warned spoiler below:

Elise Wassermann in the last episode of the Tunnel. Both DH and I were sobbing on the sofa.

Spanglemum · 06/09/2020 16:25

Atonement was absolutely heartbreaking.
As mentioned by others, Emma in One Day by David Nicholls. I didn't expect that at all. And the ending of the book is poignant too.
Just been listening to the Sally Lockhart books with my daughter. Fred Garland's death really upset me.

celestebellman · 06/09/2020 16:26

Cedric Diggory - can’t watch the end of the film when his father comes down from the audience.
Zach in Goodnight Mister Tom
Gage in Pet Sematary
Rachel in Cold Feet
Parvez in Home Fire
Tess of the D’Urbervilles

TamzinGrey · 06/09/2020 16:26

Bambi's mother.

celestebellman · 06/09/2020 16:30

Also every potential childhood death described in Life After Life, with the influenza one being especially traumatic!

happy97 · 06/09/2020 16:30

Haven't read the thread but Derek in Greys Anatomy.

MsQueenInTheNorth · 06/09/2020 16:35

Lots of the ones already mentioned on here. Boxer, Ginger, Shireen... nearly all animals and GoT characters! Tom Hiddleston’s lovely character in War Horse was quite bad too.

The bit in Chinese Cinderella where the main character’s dad sets his dog on her pet duckling. It’s described so vividly, the way it sees her and starts moving towards her on its hurt little leg Sad

I literally sobbed so much while reading it (I was probably about 14) that my mum told me to pull myself together Blush

XFPW · 06/09/2020 16:36

Matthew Cuthbert - AoGG
Mark Greene & Greg Pratt - ER
Mrs Landingham & Leo McGarry - West Wing

I have watched/read all of these more times that I can count and they still get me every time.

Going way back to my teenage years - Tony from Soldier Soldier. My goodness I sobbed at that one.

Oh, and Trevor from Pay it Forward. Urgh - ugly girl crying both reading and watching that one.

Stygimoloch · 06/09/2020 16:36

Hank in Breaking Bad. I’d grown to love him and was genuinely shocked and really sad.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/09/2020 16:37

Dobby the house elf. I remember reading it on a night flight home from Florida, I couldn't sleep and ended up sobbing quietly

ememem84 · 06/09/2020 16:38

@Biancadelrioisback

Poussey Washington Tiffany Doggett
Oh yes! I mean noooo!!! I mean 😭
CherryCocktails · 06/09/2020 16:39

Billy in Ally Mcbeal. It still brings a lump to my throat if I rewatch the episode.

MegBusset · 06/09/2020 16:43

Charlie Utter in Deadwood
Bodie and Wallace in The Wire
