Just in case, spoiler alert!

Sirius Black.

Bonden in the Aubrey/Maturin series. Killed instantly with no warning and very little follow up. He’s barely mentioned in the subsequent novels, but you’re always aware that he’s not around.

PhilODox · 06/09/2020 14:03

@TheLibraryIsOpen The Tad Williams series is Other land, and I remember the scene you're referring to, but can't recall the character name. I howled at that too.

@Mrsfrumble Miller's death was glorious though- a final act of sacrifice and kindness to Julie, just amazing. Ashford's- what a way to go out!

TorkTorkBam · 06/09/2020 14:03

Dexter Morgan's wife Rita

Ned Stark

Matthew from Anne of GG.

All very unexpected and shocking to me. All moved the plot along nicely though.

@CuriousaboutSamphire

I was relieved when Fitz died. Relieved for him. Now sort of waiting for the next generation...
Didn’t stop me bawling, though. Having read the 3 trilogies over lockdown it was weird seeing him age from a small child to his mid sixties in a few months was a bit too quick!

I’m not reading the thread in case of spoilers, but for everyone happy to see them, Maggie Tulliver 😭

I didn't find the Harry Potter ones especially sad.
Sirius and Dumbledore both felt along the lines of "oh better get rid of them so they can't support Harry" useless deaths.
Fred again felt a pointless death, done to make sure one of the Weasleys didn't survive. I think Percy could have been more poignant with him just having reconciled to them.
Tonks and Lupin I was more angry with them. It felt quite selfish for them to leave Teddy and put both at risk. I would have thought Harry could have felt that too, having lost both his parents.

I'd go with definitely Boxer, Beth March, Zac from Goodnight Mr Tom and Hazel from Watership down as others have mentioned.
But also Aunty from Gay from China at the Chalet School, and also Margot, Daisy and Primula's mum, as it's glossed over so quickly.
There's also a bit (autobiography so not fictional) in A Vicarage Family by Noel Streatfield, where her baby sibling had died, which is quite touching, although she clearly didn't really realise the impact at the time.

Opie in Sons of Anarchy, when he said "I got this".... and knew it was his time. Two years on since we watched it and DH and I still remark on it.

As PP have stated, Leslie in "Bridge to Terabithia." I read the book when I was a kid and was enjoying it so much that I was completely thrown at the end. I never saw it coming.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 06/09/2020 14:17

Rachel in Cold Feet. My dc was about the same age as her baby so maybe that's why it hit me so hard.

gingerandsmall · 06/09/2020 14:17

Fingers and Smurf in Our Girl. Had me in floods of tears.

Fred Weasley. Lupin and Tonks.

Ronnie Mitchell's daughter (can't remember her name though ... Confused) and Ronnie as well.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 06/09/2020 14:19

Not a film but the last two people on Holby City. Xav - who died jumping out the way of a bike as he hit his head on the kerb, and Essie who died from cancer seconds before she was about to marry Sasha. I cried buckets.
But films, probably like pp, the majority of the Harry Potter Characters.

Dramalady52 · 06/09/2020 14:19

Read it as a child, sobbed myself sick.

geekone · 06/09/2020 14:23

@willowmelangell

Wheel of Time series. Book 14. A Memory of Light. Bella the pony got killed on the battlefield. Floored me. Did not see it coming. All the miles she trotted, bags she carried, people she saved and she didn't get to retire in a nice meadow with a companion and an apple tree.
Yes sad ☹️
