What type of housing would you not want to live?

House , Flat Penthouse , Caravan etc

I would probably not want to live on the top floor of a massive block of flats, couldn't be bothered.

Onestepup

So in a nutshell, most people don't want to live in poor people's accommodation. Most poor people don't either TBH but the wish list of detached, garden, quiet, not a flat/caravan/terrace is not within reach. Nothing wrong with asking what people's ideal home would be like, but a bit snobbish to have a 'wouldn't touch that with a barge pole' thread.

This.
I'm stunned by some of the entitled replies on this thread - "I only do detached" fhs!
In fact I'm stunned that the OP even posted this question - typical mumsnet load of sh*t.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 05/09/2020 08:01

Flat, caravan Or towerblock. But I case you think I’m a snob, a thatched cottage in a chocolate box village. Mice and tourists.

KeepingPlain · 05/09/2020 08:03

See I wouldn't mind a terraced or flat if I had a guaranteed parking spot. But it's very rarely guaranteed, there's always some dumb twat who parks there, and then I can't park next to my own bloody house because they are too stupid to notice. Why would I spend a lot of money on something that is going to drive me crazy and also means I can't even use it all the time? If I didn't need a car, I'd happily live there as the terrace we used to rent was nice and you never heard the neighbours. That was a new build terrace too, it was well built. But sadly I do need a car and i don't like buying things i know I'm not guaranteed to be able to use. Same problem with a flat and again I've lived in some very nice new flats. Lived in some god awful old building flats too.

sweetkitty · 05/09/2020 08:11

After living in a load of flats no flats, neighbours noise, weed and smoke sleeping through the walls no thanks.

Definitely prefer detached. Ideal would be in the countryside close to the beach

Letteblue · 05/09/2020 08:15

Flats, open plan houses, I need doors and walls! And the modern type of houses that are always on design shows and seem to be 90 percent windows and glass.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 05/09/2020 08:16

No flats/maisonette type properties. No caravans or park homes. No house without a garden. I have seen some lovely modernised and renovated bungalows which has opened my eyes to them. Before, I thought they were fairly ugly.

I am currently in a mid terrace, neighbours either side are very quiet. However, my next choice would be a semi-detached, or if possible, a detached for the ideal peace and quiet set up.

ImaSababa · 05/09/2020 08:19

I would hate to live on a new build estate with those horrible sand-coloured houses and super-conventional "little families".

SmellsLikeFeet · 05/09/2020 08:29

Higher up in a tower block
An upside down house

itsgettingweird · 05/09/2020 08:30

I'd say high rise flat.

But I've lived in flats and apartments for years.

I'm fine with them but like to either be low floor and access to outside space or when I lived 4th floor I had a large balcony and the complex it's self had pool and large communal area (not U.K.!)

I think I'd still dislike a high rise block even with outside space.

I think my favourite place would be a detached house somewhere very rural. Smaller house but plenty of land.

But then I'd have to compromise on it being as coastal as I'm use to being. I've spent past 20 years being never more than 10 minutes away from a beach!

VictoriaBun · 05/09/2020 08:30

When I see tv programmes of big mansion houses ( 10+ bedrooms ) I couldn't imagine myself sat in a massive room with all that space around me. Likewise , barn conversions with a lot of headspace above . I'd feel vulnerable in them.
I also would not like to live in a high rise either. Give me a bog standard house and I'm ok.

DipSwimSwoosh · 05/09/2020 08:31

Thatched cottage. So dark and oppressive. Anywhere with low ceilings or tiny windows.

nosswith · 05/09/2020 08:36

A ground floor flat or bungalow. Noise levels are greater when you sleep on the ground floor. The one request I make of a hotel when they ask is for a higher floor.

reefedsail · 05/09/2020 08:37

I once lived high up in a tower block (44th floor). Unexpectedly, it made me feel really isolated from the world being so high up which was really bad for my mental health. It wasn't the flat itself- that was lovely- and I was only one staircase away from the very nice roof garden with stunning views of Mount Hood. I just couldn't deal with being so far away from the earth and the real world looking so tiny out of the window.

Moved to a 3rd floor flat and that was fine. So, given a choice, I'd never go so high up again.

Humm1ngb1rd · 05/09/2020 08:38

Slightly weird thread.

My first answer is a favela in South America - no mains water, no mains electricity, not on the city register, have to build it yourself ( and add an extra layer for your kids often). Or similar in India, but you get the idea?

And my sympathy goes out to families in city centre flats or "temporary accommodation" stuck in them during lockdown.

Ginfordinner · 05/09/2020 08:39

Anything that isn't detached, doesn't have a garden and doesn't have off road parking. Anything on a main road.

Lockdownseperation · 05/09/2020 08:40

@Marmunia1975

Forgot to add, I only do new builds as the thought of using someone else’s toilet....
You do realise that the builders have probably used the toilet before you
lovelyupnorth · 05/09/2020 08:41

Ex council. House. Tried it can’t cope with the neighbours.

Flat

Terrace

Anything without parking

lovelyupnorth · 05/09/2020 08:42

Oh and any new builds especially if built by any of the nationals.

Good job I’ve moved to a big barn conversion with no neighbours and lots of parking.

Furrydogmum · 05/09/2020 08:44

Would love to have no neighbours within 1/2 mile..

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/09/2020 08:46

Caravan is OK for a short holiday, nothing else unless you live on your own.

Modern townhouses would be a no too. Their proportions are all wrong. Period townhouses are fine.

Anything open plan. Just impossible to get away from noise, hideous for me.

DragonPie · 05/09/2020 09:00

Beams. I hate beams. DH laughs at me when we watch property programmes because I always point them out. They make a house look dark and they’re a hiding place for spiders.

I wouldn’t live in a block of flats especially somewhere I couldn’t be rescued from.

No garden.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 05/09/2020 09:08

Agree with no new builds. Hideous, built as quickly and cheaply as possible and no more sturdy than tissue paper.

OneKeyAtATime · 05/09/2020 09:19

Somewhere noisy2

juneisbustingout · 05/09/2020 09:23

Will remain officially homeless rather than live in a new build
Also don't fancy a bungalow or a flat.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 05/09/2020 09:23

Terrace or flats, never again. I can’t stand the noise from the neighbours!
