What type of housing would you not want to live?

House , Flat Penthouse , Caravan etc

I would probably not want to live on the top floor of a massive block of flats, couldn't be bothered.

A flat with no balcony or other outside space.
Anywhere with no outside space, come to that.

LittleHootie · 04/09/2020 23:06

I used to live in a flat with a family above me. The noise was awful. Their footsteps all day long.

I wouldnt fancy a mid-terrace for noise reasons.

I'd rather be somewhere where you can survive exiting via a window in the event of fire.

I would be scared by myself out in the countryside but the benefits would probably outweigh my nervousness.

I love caravans and bungalows. So cosy.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 04/09/2020 23:07

New build- much prefer an older house

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 04/09/2020 23:07

In the middle of thick woodland. Too dark too silent. Freaks me out. DParents say I’ve been scared ever since watching The Wind in the Willows aged 3 Blush. Give me nice sunny open rolling fields any day.

Kasparovski · 04/09/2020 23:08

Below-ground basement

terrelontane · 04/09/2020 23:08

Not long moved from a sprawling semi-detached to the top half of a town house. I’m so much more relaxed, just because there’s no ground floor to worry about. I used to spend a disproportionate amount of time double checking locks and windows and worrying about people getting into the garden. No more ground floors for me.

Bargebill19 · 04/09/2020 23:09

Not a terrace or somewhere I couldn’t make a cosy space where I wouldn’t be seen by someone outside.
Or any building built on a slope with other building below it - irrational fear if the lot sliding down the hill.

Tillygetsit · 04/09/2020 23:09

In a prison.

BluebellCockleshell123 · 04/09/2020 23:13

Anywhere without an outdoor space. I don’t need much - a balcony or terrace would be fine. Just somewhere of my own to grow a few plants and sit outside in private.
Also I’d prefer to be within walking distance of a village centre...somewhere I can wander down to meet a friend for a coffee or lunch.

PickAChew · 04/09/2020 23:13

Anywhere with too many stairs.

I live in a chalet bungalow. It's just like a normal semi but massive downstairs. I can happily live here for the foreseeable.

Kasparovski · 04/09/2020 23:15

A South American favela? Next door to a chicken processing plant? In The White House with Trump? In student digs? In a flat above a Chicken Cottage shop or a chippie? In a pre-fab? In an igloo or the ice hotel? On a ship or submarine.....lots and lots of places.

I wouldn’t want to live on an estate again. Been there, done that.

We compromised on space, both in terms of number and size of rooms in order to find a ‘character’ property in the right village within our budget. We could have bought a much larger house on an estate for less, but We definitely have no regrets.

whirlwindwallaby · 04/09/2020 23:24

I don't think I could live anywhere bigger than three bedrooms, I like my space small and to feel contained. Two plus the box room feels too big really. If I was living in a share situation with my own personal space and shared kitchen then that's different. I wouldn't want to not be able to hear if someone was in the house, like in a horror movie either.

easythatsfragile · 04/09/2020 23:28

I wouldn't want to live anywhere that didn't have access to its own outside space.

KeepingPlain · 04/09/2020 23:29

I'm quite picky about a home especially when buying one.

No terraced at all. I don't like the parking situations, usually shared parking and means having to deal with idiots who clearly skipped school as numbers are too difficult.

Any house that's at the bottom of a hill or is in a flood zone.

I don't mind a flat but would have to be big and would have to be top floor but not a massive block of flats because like someone else I don't trust them after grenfell.

Nothing too big, I don't need or want more space than I actually need. It's too empty and scary at night, plus too long to clean.

Don't really like massive estates either, or ones that are quite obviously going to be made bigger eventually even if they haven't yet bought the field. Dunno why any one kids themselves that the estate will only be that big, it just won't.

Kaiserin · 05/09/2020 00:08

Anywhere with a significant fire risk: old build with dubious safety standards, heavily DIY-ed dwelling where the previous owner got "creative" with the gas and/or electric systems, top levels of a tall, heavily clad tower, etc.?

Oh, and anywhere with a significant flood or tornado risk (or any other natural disaster risk: wouldn't live next to an active volcano or in an earthquake zone)

Let's face it, I'm a wuss (or a civil engineer, one of the two)

TwelvetyOClock · 05/09/2020 00:12

Semi detached. It's like an aversion. I don't know why I hate them so much.

Ha, same. It annoyed my girlfriend no end when we were looking for somewhere to live.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/09/2020 00:16

I could live anywhere. I have lived in some dire places! Although I wouldn't want to live in a shared house again. Flats are fine for me.

Onestepup · 05/09/2020 00:20

So in a nutshell, most people don't want to live in poor people's accommodation. Most poor people don't either TBH but the wish list of detached, garden, quiet, not a flat/caravan/terrace is not within reach. Nothing wrong with asking what people's ideal home would be like, but a bit snobbish to have a 'wouldn't touch that with a barge pole' thread.

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 05/09/2020 00:21

A terrace, semi, or house in a ‘family’ area. Just says screaming kids to me.

No ground floor flat either - I didn’t like people looking in as they walked past.

AdoptedBumpkin · 05/09/2020 00:24

Another vote for high-rise flats.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 05/09/2020 00:26

Anything new, by which I mean post 1940s. Okay, I’d stretch to 1980s.

I especially don’t like the toy town new build houses that try to look old.

Anything with big glass windows (Grand Designs style), I just think at night murderers would be able to watch you.

Anything to high up, I like the views but can’t shake the feeling that I might decide to jump off the balcony any minute on a whim.

earthyfire · 05/09/2020 00:31

Top floor of a massive grey concrete tower block or a new build with thin walls.

Mintjulia · 05/09/2020 00:46

Anywhere with no outside space
Anywhere that I wasn't allowed to paint & decorate to my own taste
Anywhere in large noisy or polluted town or city

I've done all three and know how unhappy they make me. Anywhere rural and I'm happy.
