My partner recently turned 46 and I said to him jokingly you’re in your late 40’s. He considers it mid. To me mid point is this 45.

I would class mid 40s as 44-46 so your partner is correct in my world.

I'm 57 and declare that 54-60 are mid fifties

I'm 51 and declare that late 40's

I'm 56 and most definitely mid-50s, so by that logic 46 must be mid-40s.

He's mid forties and the reason why forties has an 's' on the end is because it is plural and therefore covers a number of years.
e.g. 40 - 43 Early forties.
44 - 46 Mid forties.
47 - 49 Late forties.

46 as well and I’m definitely still in my mid-40’s.

Next year will be a different matter, I’ll have to admit to late-40’s. Judging by older siblings and friends though, 50 is the real toughie. You know you’re “older” then, no denying it.🤣

I’d say:

40-43 early forties

44- 46 mid forties

47 - 49 late forties

41-44 are early forties
45-48 are mid forties
49 is late forties. As is 50-59.

Obviously.

It's mid. If it were late there would be no point in having the concept of mid.

Mid-40's, obviously. Amazed that anyone would ever think it was late-40s, but feel confident you'll have come around to the right way of thinking by the time you turn 46 yourself.

And when it comes to 48 and 49, I'd just say I'm in my 40s. That's perfectly accurate! Why split hairs?!

Do it the same as if it's 90s music.

94-96 is mid-90s music. Before that is early 90s, after that is late 90s.

Just tell him he's on the downward slide to 50.

In an attempt to be mathematical about it: 10 years to a decade, so in thirds would be 3 and a third years to early/mid/late. But no-one would work in thirds so I'd go for 3-4-3 split. So mid.
