To work in the same place as my daughter.

I may be working in the same place as my daughter. Same dept and possibly the same office. I feel awful as I know she doesn't feel comfortable with this even though she has stated she's ok. This is more of a WWUD. Should I turn the job down or would you accept it.

Can you disown each other at work?

I guess it depends on your current job situation etc etc.

WhoAmIWhoAreYou · 04/09/2020 13:16

It all depends how badly you need the job Op.

RegularHumanBartender · 04/09/2020 13:17

Do you need the job? If not, I wouldn't take it.

HollowTalk · 04/09/2020 13:17

Is this really the only available job?

user1493413286 · 04/09/2020 13:17

If you don’t have to then I wouldn’t but if you need the job then there’s not much choice

Seeleyboo · 04/09/2020 13:17

I think it's more a case that she feels.she can't behave the way she does in work if I am there I guess. Young adults, being silly etc. I am being made redundant so do need a job but happy to walk away.

That's a really hard one!

I've worked with both parents at certain times (weirdly!) and it was tricky as I always felt like a child at work. It kept me in the place of 'junior' and it was difficult to be my true self.

But then...depends on a few things. Your relationship in general, how badly you need the job, how much you'd be working together and what the dynamic might be.

TidyDancer · 04/09/2020 13:19

If you have another option I would avoid this.

JaJaDingDong · 04/09/2020 13:20

Is it allowed? My employer will employ more than one member of the same family, but not in the same team.

I wouldn't, unless it's your absolute dream job, or the salary is more than you ever dreamed of.

How would either of you feel if the other one got dismissed for misconduct, or was on an improvement plan, or became the boss of the other, or ....

What if you thought your daughter was being mistreated in any way, or she you?

It's not fair on you, your daughter, or other team members.

Seeleyboo · 04/09/2020 13:21

I think we would have telephone communications mostly and I guess walk past each other a fair bit. I think it's more she will feel like a child again. Our relationship is very good but I know she likes her space as I do. Tough one but I think I should turn the hub down for harmony.

SunbathingDragon · 04/09/2020 13:22

I would turn it down.

seayork2020 · 04/09/2020 13:22

This was nearly 30 years ago but I worked with my mum for 5 years not always the same shifts but part of that time she was my boss, it was fine with us and we never had a problem. She had her friend's there and me mine but we all went out as a group sometimes

We drew the line work was work and we stuck to that all the time

Seeleyboo · 04/09/2020 13:23

Yes. I think you're right. I will turn it down. Not fair to her.

unmarkedbythat · 04/09/2020 13:23

If my mum came to work at my place of employment I would seek to move on, tbh. I think you're right to turn this down (unless doing so is going to cause real financial hardship).

TheHappyHerbivore · 04/09/2020 13:24

If you’re happy to walk away, and you know she doesn’t want to work alongside you, I would.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 04/09/2020 13:25

I would turn it down - I wouldn't have applied for a job in the same company in the first place.

FindingNeverland1 · 04/09/2020 13:26

I would hate it if my mum took a job in my office / dpt. I have a 'home' persona and a 'work' persona. Also, I just wouldn't want to be around my mother professionally.

But.. if you need the job desperately then do it. She can leave if she hates it or you can search for other things while you're there. It sort of comes down to how much you need this.

HoratiotheHorsefly · 04/09/2020 13:26

Sorry but I don't think you should turn it down.

Your daughter is an adult and you're being made redundant. She should understand that right now jobs are few and far between and you need employment.

ScrapThatThen · 04/09/2020 13:27

I think it would be treading on her toes, glad you are respecting that op.

Love51 · 04/09/2020 13:27

I've known a few people work with family in non-family employment. My DH and his sister, and two women who worked in a school I worked in. They had a very unusual surname so you had to be clear if you wanted MISS Unusualsurname or MRS Unusualsurname. My DH wasn't anymore annoyed by his sister than by scores of other colleagues he's had over the years. When she started they switched her and another new starter so she and DH weren't sat right next to each other, but once he got promoted and she got a proper contract they just got on with it. I've literally just remembered that 2 of my current colleagues are sisters, it is the kind of thing that gives you a surprised reaction when you find out, then you file under ', irrelevant information'.
To my mind it isn't a reason to turn down a job. If you live together be aware she might want some space from you at some point though, and don't go on about work at home. Historically people have always worked with family, normally the children following in the parent's footsteps though!

sapnupuas · 04/09/2020 13:28

I worked with a mum and daughter. Different departments, though lots of overlap.

They'd often argue on the drive in and then refuse to talk to each other in the office. This could go on for days.

MimosaFields · 04/09/2020 13:32

I worked with twins once. They were around 35 and they still dressed pretty much identically. It was a large company so for a long time I thought it was just one person. They were not in my department.

Then one day I walked into the toilets and they were both there. I had the shock of my life

MimosaFields · 04/09/2020 13:33

PS:I know my answer was irrelevant. Sorry. In your case, I would decline the offer

AintPageantMaterial · 04/09/2020 13:38

MimosaFields= it might have been irrelevant but it made me laugh 😆

AfolMummy · 04/09/2020 13:49

MimosaFields 🤣🤣
